Wilcox Park is a park and arboretum located at 71 ½ High Street, Westerly, Rhode Island. It is open to the public at all times, without fee, and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973 as Wilcox Park Historic District. The historic district includes 84 houses/buildings of the neighborhood surrounding the park covering a 50acre area, including the main post office and public library of the town of Westerly.Wilcox Park was the 1898 bequest of Harriet Wilcox, widow of Stephen Wilcox. The latter invented the non-explosive boiler and founded, along with fellow West'lyan Herman Babcock, the giant engineering firm of Babcock & Wilcox, and was a major funder of the Romanesque Westerly Public Library, which faces the park and was built in 1892.Wilcox Park was designed in 1898 by Warren H. Manning, who had been until 1896 an associate of Frederick Law Olmsted, and originally dominated by plants native to the region. However in the 1960s efforts began to develop the park as an arboretum. Current specialties include a dwarf conifer garden, herb garden, garden of the senses, and perennial garden, set off by fine Westerly granite masonry designed by landscape architect Arthur Shurcliff in 1929-1930.The park contains a number of monuments and memorials including the Wilcox Memorial Fountain, designed by John Francis Paramino and given in honor of Harriet and Stephen Wilcox. One tree was planted in memory of boxing champion Rocky Marciano.

  • Hi, This was a great event. Wilcox park and the immediate area of Westerly is great. Good food, and beer nearby. Parking relatively hassle less, park within the lines or the Town of Westerly revenue e...  more »
  • This park is only about a couple of blocks square, but there is so much contrast in this small place that it feels much bigger. Beds of lilies and hydrangea move into beautiful old trees, then there's...  more »
  • With all the activities planned the park is an entertaining venue. Still, in quiet times this historically designed park offers sun, shade, peace and quiet.  more »

  • A privately owned and maintained park! that is always clean and kept up to date. Always open to the public and also available for events for your family etc. Good for a stroll, walk, run, picnic, sightseeing, bird watching, kite flying or just cutting through on your way to downtown. The only thing no longer (ever?) available are public restrooms. You are able to use the library facilities at the West end of the park and large events usually have porta johns.
  • Small but fabulous town center park with variety of paved trails. Trees throughout the park are identified and labeled with scientific names. Small pond attracts ducks and other birds. Great park for picnic, jogging, walking, and lazing in the summer sun.
  • Nice park with a little pond. I usually go here to play Pokemon go as there are many walking distance gyms and stops for a good adventure.
  • This park is beautifully kept up. Lots of different types of trees that are marked with signs. Has a pond. Seasonal activities.
  • Beautiful park to walk around plus many scheduled events throughout the warmer seasons art festivals, music, Shakespeare in the park, plants in the spring and summer pops!
