Mounts Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located in West Palm Beach, Florida. It is Palm Beach County's oldest and largest public garden with over 2,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants from six continents, including plants native to Florida, exotic trees, tropical fruit, herbs, citrus and palms. Mounts is a component of the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service and is affiliated with the University of Florida / IFAS.HistoryBotanical plantings began shortly after the Mounts Building was built and opened in 1954. Then Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Director, Marvin Mounts, desired to create a tropical fruit tree arboretum on the adjacent three acres. This vision was never realized, but many tropical fruits were planted and a few remain to this day.In 1975 Clayton Hutcheson, Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Director, had a vision of creating a Horticultural Learning Center on the three acres surrounding the Mounts Building, which housed the Extension Service. This initiative was successfully supported by many local plant-focused organizations and volunteers and was created in 1983. Today’s Garden was formed by a public-private partnership of Palm Beach County and the Friends of Mounts Horticultural Learning Center in 1985. Ten additional acres were added to the property in 1985, bringing the total acreage to fourteen. In 1986, the Friends voted to officially change the name to Mounts Botanical Garden for a more clear understanding of the organization and its mission driven purpose.

  • Attended a wedding and was told the wedding guests could walk around the grounds before/after the ceremony; as I was there early with my boyfriend, who was helping the groom and guys set up, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to warm up a bit from the cold weather by moving around. The gardens are just as beautiful as I remember from a previous visit about 4 years ago. The last time I was here, the bridge was closed and the water-walkways were not open. Enjoyed walking the area and sitting by the pond to watch the koi fish, who were happy to say hello because they thought I had food. Worth freezing a bit more to sit still and watch them! Perhaps it was the cold or the entry fee, but the traffic in the park was light and it was the perfect opportunity to take a moment, in the wedding and holiday madness, to just breathe and disconnect. I liked that the wedding area is set to the back so there is not a lot of foot traffic from garden visitors. Also, the pavilion and seating area are set under some lovely shade trees and the landscaping around both create the illusion of lush seclusion. The bridge railing leading to this area may be a reason for concern, however, as it was easily pushed against as the guys tied tulle to it, and did not appear secure. Only huge drawback: airplane noise. And yes, they had to pause the ceremony for one of them who had perfect timing.
  • So beautiful, we've been a few times. It's like a tucked away gem im west palm beach. When your inside the garden you almost forget where you are. It's a great place to take pictures of the little ones for keep sakes. Its free although there is a donation box at the front. Benches all along the way. Super cute photo location. Love it!
  • Currently there is a wash ashore exhibit at the garden which is included with admission. These are large sculptures of sea creatures created from ocean debris . The garden also has a great variety of trees and vegetation and is divided into different areas such as the herb and tea garden. Water garden, desert garden , butterfly garden and maze etc. Plan on spending several hours.. Well worth the visit. .
  • This is a wonderful garden with lots of trails, trees, flowers, fish and interesting information. They support the Master Gardner program as well as 4H. Suggested entry is $5 per person and my suggestion is bring your camera. On warm muggy days, some insect repellent might be in order. Easy to find, on Military Trail just north of Southern Blvd. Very near the Airport, so expect some noise.
  • Absolutely unbelievable! We visited this garden last on a weeklong botanical garden tour of south Florida gardens. Although the Viscaya was amazing, Mounts was compactly wonderful. As we were short on time, we only toured a few of the many garden sections. The sheer number of specimen quality plants was amazing. You have to see to believe this wonderful garden spot. I am absolutely planning a return visit having plenty of time to see all the wonderful exotic plants.
