Mounts Botanical Garden, West Palm Beach

(4.5/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Mounts Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located in West Palm Beach, Florida. It is Palm Beach County's oldest and largest public garden with over 2,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants from six continents, including plants native to Florida, exotic trees, tropical fruit, herbs, citrus and palms. Mounts is a component of the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service and is affiliated with the University of Florida / IFAS.HistoryBotanical plantings began shortly after the Mounts Building was built and opened in 1954. Then Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Director, Marvin Mounts, desired to create a tropical fruit tree arboretum on the adjacent three acres. This vision was never realized, but many tropical fruits were planted and a few remain to this day.In 1975 Clayton Hutcheson, Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Director, had a vision of creating a Horticultural Learning Center on the three acres surrounding the Mounts Building, which housed the Extension Service. This initiative was successfully supported by many local plant-focused organizations and volunteers and was created in 1983. Today’s Garden was formed by a public-private partnership of Palm Beach County and the Friends of Mounts Horticultural Learning Center in 1985. Ten additional acres were added to the property in 1985, bringing the total acreage to fourteen. In 1986, the Friends voted to officially change the name to Mounts Botanical Garden for a more clear understanding of the organization and its mission driven purpose.

  • It's well done. There are many varieties of plants, flowers, some sculptures, a garden of fruit & vegetables, even a lake where many fish swim.

  • We love botanical gardens but this was a bit disappointing due to the drought as there was not much in bloom and the displays needed more attention. It's nice that a new section is under construction ...  more »
  • The flowers here are gorgeous and unusual, and they have a large pond with big goldfish. There are hedges trimmed into a castle shape and a cute tiki-type structure. Very pleasant to walk around or si...  more »

  • Attended an annual plant sale fund raiser event. The vendors were friendly, knowledgeable and the plants (especially the orchids) were breathtaking. After walking the grounds we did decide to become members so that we could return often to view all of the different gardens. This would be a great place to come for a picnic lunch & leisurely walk after.
  • Went a few months ago and loved the place! Nature is always refreshing. It would make you forget all your worries! I am not a garden specialist but you'll walk out wanting to have o care better for yours. On top of all, there are very few places left, that you can go for free or just give a contribution as you please. Not a place for picnic -for obvious reasons.
  • This is first time i saw this type of natural garden...You can see plant and tree of vegetables and fruits. Lots of variety of another plant.. Small lake and in lake you can see orange and black fist and tortoise even you can feed this animals.. Garden is too clean and maintain.. You feel like you are walking in small jungle.:-)
  • I love this botanical garden a lot.I wish you could stay open later on during the day.You close early everyday at 4 pm so many times when I want to visit your botanical gardens because I have free time you are closed. You should stay open till 7 or 8 pm at least one day a week for working people.
  • beautiful for adults, not so great for kids. bring a date and some picnic stuff and it'll be a great date. BRING BUG SPRAY
