Mounts Botanical Garden, West Palm Beach

#4 of 8 in Parks in West Palm Beach
Mounts Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located in West Palm Beach, Florida. It is Palm Beach County's oldest and largest public garden with over 2,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants from six continents, including plants native to Florida, exotic trees, tropical fruit, herbs, citrus and palms. Mounts is a component of the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service and is affiliated with the University of Florida / IFAS.HistoryBotanical plantings began shortly after the Mounts Building was built and opened in 1954. Then Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Director, Marvin Mounts, desired to create a tropical fruit tree arboretum on the adjacent three acres. This vision was never realized, but many tropical fruits were planted and a few remain to this day.In 1975 Clayton Hutcheson, Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Director, had a vision of creating a Horticultural Learning Center on the three acres surrounding the Mounts Building, which housed the Extension Service. This initiative was successfully supported by many local plant-focused organizations and volunteers and was created in 1983. Today’s Garden was formed by a public-private partnership of Palm Beach County and the Friends of Mounts Horticultural Learning Center in 1985. Ten additional acres were added to the property in 1985, bringing the total acreage to fourteen. In 1986, the Friends voted to officially change the name to Mounts Botanical Garden for a more clear understanding of the organization and its mission driven purpose.

This a nice little garden for a $5 donation. Unfortunately the noise of the airport next door takes away from the ambiance. Their new floating garden is nice. If you are on a very long delay or layove...  more »

This place is perfect for looking for gardeners and nature lovers. It's so peaceful to go there and just relax. Feel the breeze. See the pretty plants and feed the koi. You never really notice the airplanes going by above you. It's a grand source for inspiration if you're looking to better improve your garden or yard. Admission is cheap and they even have a nursery where you can buy some plants. Really, if you're into nature and plants, you'll love this place.

Thoroughly enjoyed all the exotic plants and brilliant colors of the flowers and bracts. I appreciated that many were identified with labels of their regular name and Latin name. In addition there were employees who were very knowledgeable. Don't miss the gift shop with the unique items and reasonable prices. And remember to look for the Rainbow Eucalyptus tree.

Nice walk in a well-organized botanical garden. Family-friendly -- be sure to stop by their gift shop to buy a $1 bag of food to feed the koi and turtles in the large pond. Bonus (depending on your opinion), it's super close to the airport if you need to pass some time or just want to enjoy the flowers while kids enjoy the parade of planes approaching for landing. We went during a special event, so it's a little hard to say what a normal weekend is like, but there were many types of little gardens to see, including one filled with vegetables. Several large mango trees nearby were full of fruit, too.

This place just gets better with age! The grounds and expansion of the gardens are just perfect for showing off the native plants of South Florida. Some people might find it annoying to be right next to the airport, but I loved seeing the huge airplanes as they fly right over you just before landing. It was just amazing to watch. The reason I am not rating Mounts botanical gardens with 5 stars is because some of the paths were dirt and not only did it get into my sandals, there was a man in a wheelchair who could not go down some paths.

My wife and I love to visit this botanical garden often. They've done some recent updates that are nice and they have a plant nursery now in the back. Another great visit.
