  • My kids and I love going for walks in the park. You can either go for a walk out in on the trails which are great for nature walks or head over to the lake and walk along the 2 mile paved path going around the lake. They've really put a lot of resources into the park over the past few years.
  • The Reservation is one of the best aspects of living the the South Orange / Maplewood area. It's huge, but also has good access and amenities. There is a really nice dog park, and also a closed off road section that is great for kids to use to learn to ride bicycles, etc. If you want to go hiking, there are tons of trails and things to see, like waterfalls and rivers. Plenty of scenic views as well. There is a huge picnic area in the middle that is mostly empty during the week, so is a good place to play with pets that aren't excited about the dog park, or just have a family picnic. We come here all the time. Having grown up in a more rural area, where I could easily walk out my back door and be in the woods for hours, the Reservation makes living near NYC much more bearable for me. It's a huge asset for the local community.
  • Serene and peaceful place to walk. Maintenance is OK, but sometimes it gets quite dirty. Thankfully, there are volunteers, who collect garbage along the paths at times as they walk along. A lot of dead trees all over since the last couple of storms. I am glad that they have planted some new trees to replace the fallen ones. The only big problem is some irresponsible and disrespectful people who walk their untrained dogs off leash. The dogs run up to the other people and cause arguments. Allegedly, there is a fine for having the dogs off leash outside the dog park, but never saw anyone getting fined.
  • One of the best hiking areas in this part of NJ. Trails are decently maintained. There are lots of gravel pathways where people come for walks. Elevation is not too much, mostly easy hikes. There's a little waterfall if you start from the trail heads near cherry lane and take the yellow trail (I'm not sure if it's the yellow trail, I'll have to check next time I go). If you would rather just walk around a lake, then go to South mountain recreation complex. There's paddle boat rentals to boat on the orange reservoir. The walkway around the lake is around 2 miles long, very flat, and always full of people walking around it. It is lined with trees and makes for a great walk any time of day.
  • We had the Muckfest here. Logistics were awesome. Plenty of space for a large event.
