Big Brutus, West Mineral

#32 of 153 in Museums in Kansas
Big Brutus is the nickname of the Bucyrus-Erie model 1850-B electric shovel, which was the second largest of its type in operation in the 1960s and 1970s. Big Brutus is the centerpiece of a mining museum in West Mineral, Kansas where it was used in coal strip mining operations. The shovel was designed to dig from 20 to 69 feet (6.1 to 21.0 m) down to unearth relatively shallow coal seams, which would themselves be mined with smaller equipment.

  • Excellent little stop. Lots of history in the middle of nowhere. $8 an adult and well worth the time.  more »
  • Not very often do I feel so tiny but up against this monstrosity, I did. I wasn't sure the $8 admission was worth it but yes, after spending most of an afternoon here, wandering around, I'd say, yes....  more »
  • This thing is massive! I can only imagine what it was like when it was operational. It costs $8 to get onto the grounds and there is a small museum/visitors center. You can get a couple of decent...  more »

  • I took two older gentleman to Big Brutus today and they really enjoyed their visit. We learn so much stuff and watching the video they have in the museum is worth it. You learn a lot of things about the construction of Big Brutus. We were able to climb up into Big Brutus and check out some of the major systems of the big giant including sitting in the seat where the controller sat. Keep in mind that all ages can enjoy this attraction but if you want to get inside of the unit you're going to have to climb several ladders that might be difficult for older people. We all thought that it was a very unique attraction and worth the visit. As of 9/11/ 2019 an adult ticket was $8 senior citizen was $7.50 each.
  • My kids loved stopping to see Big Brutus. They loved being able to climb up stairs inside and sit in the control room. If you have a chance, stop and see this great piece of history.
  • The museum and displays are well cared for and the staff was informative. Would have been awesome if they allowed access to the boom but the insurance company doesn't want the liability. Bonus you can stay overnight in your camper.
  • If you have any appreciation for machinery, construction, the coal industry, or even just world's largest things, you should see Big Brutus. The scale of this shovel is hard to describe. The stats are staggering. It weighed, when operating, something like 11 million pounds. I will suggest visiting in the fall or early spring. We went in July and it was like an oven inside the giant metal beast!
  • Wow! Big Brutus did not disappoint! You really don't appreciate how big it is until you're up close. I wasn't expecting to be able to go inside the machine, so that was a nice surprise! This is truly a unique, interesting, historic, and informative stop, and it's totally worth a look if you're passing through the area. An hour or so is just about perfect to see everything without feeling rushed.
