  • I like old machinery and stuff so this was a must see for me. Even though Big Brutus is not 100 years old it is some thing to see. You will stand at awe at the size of this machine. It is hard to thin...  more »
  • I have been here several times over the years and am always amazed - and glad I came back. The size alone is impressive, but it is a great opportunity to learn some local history.  more »
  • The first time I saw Big Brutus was in October 1963 while it was scooping up train loads of dirt in a strip pit. Now 54 years later, it is a museum for a new generation to gaze at in wonder. You can c...  more »

  • Driving through Kansas (Missouri to Colorado) with 3 kids under 8 years old. Despite all the 2-lane and back roads to get here, this only added about a half hour of actual drive time to our trip. We packed our own picnic and the kids had fun exploring this cavernous old shovel. It's hard to overstate the size of this thing; it really is enormous. One of the things that's easy to miss is all of the long, skinny "lakes" surrounding this thing. It's a bit of an "aha" moment when you realize that these gigantic trenches were dug by the mining industry (very likely by Brutus himself). They stretch over miles and miles across the Kansas landscape and are stocked with fish for recreation now. If you're a technology, construction, history, or mining nerd...this is worth your time. A Rust Belt relic from a different era. Very cool.
  • A very interesting place to visit, especially if you have young kids. This really is one of those things that you have to see to believe. Big Brutus is a monster that towers above everything around it. A great piece of Kansas history hidden in the middle of nowhere! Well worth the visit.
  • Very cool place, we stopped expecting to be underwhelmed but it was awesome for kids. If you have the time, worth the detour. Big Brutus' size cannot be understated, it was fun to walk around in & around it. Lots of history of coal strip mining to read up on.
  • Really cool attraction. It is probably out of the way unless you live close, but if you are around SE Kansas, take a day trip out there and see it. I was the ONLY person there for an hour. It's cool to check it out without feeling pressured to move through fast. A very unique landmark and one more I can mark off the "Bucket List" Kansas site. To say it was huge would be an understatement. Go see it!
  • fun, amazing place to visit. didn't know coal mining used to be a big business in Kansas. they have hook ups for campers and shelters for picnics
