Mount Hood, called Wy'east by the Multnomah tribe, is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of northern Oregon. It was formed by a subduction zone on the Pacific coast and rests in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located about 50mi east-southeast of Portland, on the border between Clackamas and Hood River counties. In addition to being Oregon's highest mountain, it is one of the loftiest mountains in the nation based on its prominence. The height assigned to Mount Hood's snow-covered peak has varied over its history. Modern sources point to three different heights: 11249ft, a 1991 adjustment of a 1986 measurement by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS), 11240ft based on a 1993 scientific expedition, and 11239ft of slightly older origin. The peak is home to 12 named glaciers and snowfields. It is the highest point in Oregon and the fourth highest in the Cascade Range. Mount Hood is considered the Oregon volcano most likely to erupt, though based on its history, an explosive eruption is unlikely. Still, the odds of an eruption in the next 30 years are estimated at between 3 and 7 percent, so the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) characterizes it as "potentially active", but the mountain is informally considered dormant.Using our online itinerary creator, Welches attractions like Mount Hood National Forest can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

We stayed at a free campsite on the side of Mt Hood. You couldn't see the mountain for the clouds. And it was very cold. Frozen out, but beautiful. We didn't stay long on the mountain as snow was pred... more »

I absolutely am in LOVE with this place. I have hiked, rock climbed, bouldered, rafted, snowshoed, camped, and climbed monster trees here!! I love bringing people up to places they have never seen before to experience the joy of nature at its finest. It's epic to say the least. Easy to get to with a highway going up and through the mountain. Many levels of outdoors for the amateur to the expert. Get outside!!

One of the must to do at Oregon. The drive is good, and the parking is ample along the pathway. One should reserve a whole day with some swim gears for the awesome clear lake. There is one limited public restroom there and gas station is in range of 2-3 miles. The majestic view of lake and the mountain is mesmerizing.

So glad to have a beautiful mountain to explore so close to the city! In less than an hour's drive, you can get to so many fun trails and beautiful areas. I can't remember the names of all the trails we've explored, but we especially enjoyed the gorgeous view from the top of Tom, Dick, and Harry mountain. I'd recommend going all the way up!

It was so beautiful and peaceful in Mr. Hood. There were so many beautiful sights to see in every direction. Not to mention there was snow in the middle of the summer. How cool is that! There are some hills that run special classes for skiing and snowboarding during the summer to teach you how to ski or board without all the grounds. If the winter sports aren't your thing there is a plethora of shops to explore as well.

Timothy Lake is one of my favorite places to get away. At the base of Mt Hood it has beautiful scenery, great campsites, remote location and for me, a positive is the 10 mph speed limit. It's just fisherman, canoes, kiaks and swimmers. No speed boats or jet skis. Just thinking about it makes me want to go there now.
