Poinsett State Park, Wedgefield

4.5
Poinsett State Park is located in Sumter County in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The park is best known for its botanical oddities, combining the flora of the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills and Piedmont of Upstate South Carolina, the xeric Sandhills and the Atlantic coastal plain. In Poinsett State Park one can see mountain laurels draped with Spanish moss. The park, which has been called "weird and beautiful", is named after amateur botanist and South Carolina native Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico and popularizer of the poinsettia. There is no charge for admission to Poinsett State Park, but there are small fees for overnight camping and cabin rentals. The park is surrounded by the Manchester State Forest, and both provide access to the Palmetto Trail, linked hiking and mountain bike trails, and Manchester State Forest offers equestrian trails.HistoryLocated on the High Hills of Santee and descending to the Wateree Swamp, the site was used by various Siouan tribes of Native Americans, including the Santee, Wateree and Catawba, primarily for hunting. The non-Siouan Congaree lived nearby and may have also frequented the area.

  • We have camped here and have had mixed feelings about it. The first time was a few years ago during the summer. We went on a trail and we were trailed and harassed by these gigantic, buzzing and biting horse flies. Horse flies because Poinsett has horse trails and places for horses. My husband had a tick on his back after the trail hike. We weren’t on horses - just walking. But the last time we visited which was yesterday, it was very pleasant. The pond looked even bigger. Were thinking of bringing our kayaks like the people in the pond yesterday. Everything was peaceful and relaxing.
  • Poinsett state park is an absolutely breath taking state park to be hold. The camp grounds allow for a decent aloud of room and give you a good range of choices for camping styles. That cabin combine modern and rustic in a beautiful way. The trail are well maintain and offer a great experience to take home.
  • This is my go to spot for mountain biking. That's mostly due to it being one of the only places to mountain bike. However, the trails are well maintained. The scenery is beautiful, especially the Spanish moss hanging from tree branches. This is a great place to take your family for outdoor activities. There are lots of hiking/biking trails, boat rentals, and picnic areas.
  • Beautiful trails to walk and a picturesque lake. We took family pictures here and loved this location. Make sure you download an offline map if you'll be using that to navigate as cell phone reception peters out not far into the park. Obey the speed limit sign if you value you car's suspension and or tires. The road in is paved but full of giant potholes.
  • It's close, convenient and a good outdoor excursion. Good trails to ride and plenty of space. Then you can take a rest around a cool lake with a lot of things to watch.
