Poinsett State Park is located in Sumter County in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The park is best known for its botanical oddities, combining the flora of the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills and Piedmont of Upstate South Carolina, the xeric Sandhills and the Atlantic coastal plain. In Poinsett State Park one can see mountain laurels draped with Spanish moss. The park, which has been called "weird and beautiful", is named after amateur botanist and South Carolina native Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico and popularizer of the poinsettia. There is no charge for admission to Poinsett State Park, but there are small fees for overnight camping and cabin rentals. The park is surrounded by the Manchester State Forest, and both provide access to the Palmetto Trail, linked hiking and mountain bike trails, and Manchester State Forest offers equestrian trails.HistoryLocated on the High Hills of Santee and descending to the Wateree Swamp, the site was used by various Siouan tribes of Native Americans, including the Santee, Wateree and Catawba, primarily for hunting. The non-Siouan Congaree lived nearby and may have also frequented the area.Arrange your visit to Poinsett State Park and discover more family-friendly attractions in Wedgefield using our Wedgefield trip itinerary builder.

Rented a cabin for a night. Walked some trails, made a fire and enjoyed our night. Quiet and peaceful.
Biking and hiking trails. Nuff said. Many dozens of miles of beautiful Midland SC woods, adjoining the thousands of acres of Manchester State Forest. A quiet camping retreat. Bring bug spray in spring/ summer. Public shooting range open every other weekend just down the road in state Forest and OHV trails.
Stay in the cabins. We recently stayed here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very rustic, clean and really nice on the inside. We stayed in cabin #3 for 3 nights. Very affordable and a peaceful setting in the woods. Would come back.
This is a beautiful park with a variety of things to do. There are miles of hiking trails, paddle boarding, kayak and canoes and very nice stone faced cabins available to rent.
Very secluded. Nice campsites. Wasn't crowded.
Wonderful hiking trails, year round boat rentals... The BEST campground host ever, clean and warm bathrooms, and the park staff has been great too. They even delivered our firewood to our campsite!
