Mountain Nature / Park
Mount Constitution is a mountain on Orcas Island, and the highest point in the San Juan Islands and the second highest mountain on an ocean island in the contiguous 48 state. Only Devils Peak in the Channel Islands of California is higher. A stone observation tower patterned after a medieval watch tower stands at the summit. It was designed by architect Ellsworth Storey and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936. The tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding islands, the Cascade Mountains, and many Canadian and American cities. On a clear day, the view encompasses locations as diverse as Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, Saturna Island, and the cities of Vancouver, and Victoria, British Columbia. Mount Constitution lies within the 5000acre Moran State Park. The prominence was named by Charles Wilkes during the Wilkes Expedition of 1838-1842 for the USS Constitution.

  • Beautiful views at the top. Only downside is they're currently doing construction on the lookout tower so we couldn't go up to the top. I would recommend this place to anyone who visits the island.
  • Amazing place for a day trip from Bellevue. There is something for everyone. Water sports , hiking, biking and nature lovers will like this place equally.
  • My parents brought me here as a child and I never forgot it. The views are indescribable and I recommend everyone see them at least once in their lifetime. I was disappointed to find out that the tower was closed due to construction, but it was my own fault for not checking the website until the night before we were going to be here. When able to climb the tower, you must!! The tower gives 360° views of the Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, Victoria (BC), Vancouver (BC), and everywhere else (as far as the eye can see). This is definitely a visit you want to make on a clear-sky day and don't forget your camera!! You'll regret it if you do!! There's a small gift shop with limited hours and no running water (shop lady said it got tore out with the tower) but hopefully when the tower is re-opened, it will have running water for everyone... and hopefully (fingers crossed) some flush toilets...?? Nothing like a handi-can to counteract such a beautiful view! Be advised: this is located within Moran State Park where a Discovery Pass is required for day visits (Discovery Pass is included with overnight camping for each day you are camping) on Orcas Island (only accessible ONLY by ferry (hefty costs for vehicles and passengers; make reservations on ferries if possible; don't miss your scheduled ferry; read ferry sailing schedules VERY carefully to verify which ones actually stop at Orcas Island) or SMALL private/chartered boat/plane (assuming a hefty cost also). Also, the drive up/down the mountain is REALLY steep, so be careful when driving vehicles that are less than road-worthy!! Hope this helped!!
  • Great view of the islands! We drove up and it was an easy 10-15 minutes up. Great place to bring a lunch and enjoy the scenery.
  • To the person who didn't give this 5 Stars, what was it you didn't get from your experience? What were you rating? To me this Mountain is 5 stars. Even in the mist is was a wonderful hike. Coming back the next day and seeing the views on a Sunny Day was amazing. I was looking at Vancouver, Bellingham, Anacortes, the other San Juan Islands, other Canada, and way down to Raineer. There were sheer cliffs dropping down to Twin Ponds, the salt water, and despite the miniature deer' s poop that I put my hand it while trying to scale the hill, this was epicly lovely. The 2nd highest point on an island, in the lower 48, with the exception of some arid peak on the Channel Islands. And to add even more specialness, some CCC Dudes built a road to the top so anyone can take a ride to the top and experience God's Amazingness without having to sweat through their last clean set of undies 4 days into their 9 day trip. And here's to you cookie guy down in town who made the Insanely Amazing Cowboy Cookie I am eating while sitting her and staring at My. Baker with a crazy thunder storm threatening this fabulously sunny May Day.
