Tidal Basin, Washington DC

4.6
#4 of 27 in Parks in Washington DC
Relax by the water and see some of America's proudest monuments at Tidal Basin. This man-made inlet was created in the 19th century as a means to control the high tides of the Potomac River. Today, along the banks you can visit some of Washington D.C.’s famous memorials honoring historic figures, including Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The scenic basin, with approximately 3,750 cherry trees in its vicinity, is also noted as the venue for the National Cherry Blossom Festival at the start of spring each year. If you'd like to do your sightseeing from the water, you can rent a paddle boat. The basin is also a great spot to take an aimless stroll or have a picnic. From the area, you have easy access to the National Mall and its many sites. To visit Tidal Basin and other attractions in Washington DC, use our Washington DC trip maker website .

  • The Tidal Basin is surrounded by hundreds (thousands?) of famous Cherry Blossom trees, gifted by Japan to the US over 100 years ago. While The Cherry Blossom season is short and unpredictable (due to ...  more »
  • The tidal basin is part of West Potomac Park. Cherry tree was a gift from Japan in 1912, but many of which are planted here, the annual national Cherry Blossom Festival has opened in the spring.

  • Nice walk to get to the MLK, FDR, and Jefferson Memorials. We were here in December, so it was quite cold. It was still a beautiful walk, but I imagine it’s much more pleasant in the Spring.  more »

  • Been here twice before, but this was the first time I saw the glory of cherry blossom, and what a breathtaking experience! We also got really lucky because it was sunny without a cloud and we beat the crowd. We have seen cherry blossom in other well known parks before, e.g., Branch Brook Park in NJ, but nothing beats this! Tips: arrive early to beat the crowd and get free parking at nearby West Potomac Park.
  • Recalled coming here for the MLK Memorial, then finding all those other landmarks clustered around the National Mall and the Smithsonian Castle. Look for me at the Cherry Blossom Festival.
  • Nice walking paths around the area.
  • I visited this place early morning during the peak of the Cheery blossom: it simply was stunning to say the least.
  • Two UH-60 Blackhawks in a low hover so cool.
