  • What a lovely place to spend the afternoon. You can spend as much or as little time as you like. There is a 20 dollar suggested donation, but if you stay outside and just enjoy the gardens no one is going to ask you for it. Lots of interesting history here, what a cool lady!
  • Amazing estate. Everything is lovely and charming. Ms. Merriweather-Post is an interesting person to study. She was elegant, intelligent, gracious and ahead of her time. The docent tour is highly recommended but a visit on one's own is still a wonderful. One of DC's secret places off the beaten path. Highly recommend.
  • Hillwood is a Hidden Treasure I am very pleased I stumbled across it and spent my last day of a 2 week holiday in Washington DC there ... it was an amazing place very peaceful and filled with wonderful collections. The dosants are extremely knowledgeable and the guide tour of the mansion is a must do.
  • Went on the recommendation of a coworker. My girlfriend and I will definitely be going again. There is no fee, but there is a suggested donation, which we made and I recommend others make as well for what you get out of it. The whole estate is breathtaking. Definitely take your time. The whole estate is big enough that, even with a crowded parking lot, you never feel crowded by people.
  • I went here while taking students on a school trip. The museum was easy to locate and had on-site parking for a bus, which meant that I, and our driver, were able to go in as well. The grounds were beautiful, with the flowers.

Where to stay in Washington DC

Most visitors to Washington, D.C., end up in the East End, the old downtown district containing most of the city's major cultural attractions. For a more authentic Washingtonian experience, consider staying at a smaller hotel just a little north or east of this busy area. Neighborhoods outside downtown offer less expensive accommodations and affordable street parking, as well as opportunities to meet more locals and fewer tourists. Alternatively, try a hotel in Georgetown, packed with high-end shops and Colonial architecture.
