Where to stay in Washington DC

Most visitors to Washington, D.C., end up in the East End, the old downtown district containing most of the city's major cultural attractions. For a more authentic Washingtonian experience, consider staying at a smaller hotel just a little north or east of this busy area. Neighborhoods outside downtown offer less expensive accommodations and affordable street parking, as well as opportunities to meet more locals and fewer tourists. Alternatively, try a hotel in Georgetown, packed with high-end shops and Colonial architecture.

  • Dean & Deluca used to represent the highest and best in food quality and service. For the location in DC, not anymore. Thinking it was an anomaly one time, I kept coming back, hoping for the best. Nope--the store and outside area seem dirty all the time, the food in the cases looked beyond tired and the coffee service area is messy and always missing something. The people are nice, but it's like the soul of a once-great shop has been sucked out. It makes me so sad.
  • I was here for the first time with a friend in town, and it was wonderful. The deli chef helped us pick out a delicious meal and heated it up for us. Then he sent us over to the back of the house to sample wines that paired with our meal. It was so nice to purchase wine by the glass and then sit outside to enjoy people watching.
  • Delicious espresso and variety of higher end imported goods to choose from. Patio area is decent....bathrooms are disgusting. Outdated HVAC is dripping water directly in front of toilet which makes for an unpleasant sit down experience. Overall, shopping experience is legit.
  • If you want good coffee, you can find it here. The coffee is authentic of sorts. Nothing like Starbucks. When the weather is nice, sit outside if you can. If you want to impress with your cooking skills, grab your ingredients from here. But remember, this place is best for special meal prep and not for your monthly grocery store visit. The prices justify this assessment.
  • I love their sushi. It is quick to get, delicious, good quality, and much cheaper (and tastier) than my local Whole Food's. The coffee is great and they have a really good selection of gourmet products and kitchen decor, etc. I stop by whenever I'm in the Georgetown area.
