Historic Washington State Park (formerly Old Washington Historic State Park) is a 101-acre (41 ha) Arkansas state park in Hemsptead County, Arkansas in the United States. The museum village contains a collection of pioneer artifacts from the town of Washington, Arkansas, which is a former pioneer settlement along the Southwest Trail. Walking interpretive tours are available throughout the 54 buildings. Washington served as a major trading point along the Southwest Trail, evolving into the Hempstead county seat and later the capital of Arkansas from 1863 to 1865 when Little Rock was threatened during the Civil War. The original plat of Washington was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 as the Washington Historic District.Put Historic Washington State Park and other Washington attractions into our Washington trip planner, and watch your holiday take shape.
During the 1820s and 1830s, Washington was a stopover for travelers going to Texas. It was originally the county seat of Hempstead County until a new courthouse was completed in Hope, which was designated the seat of government in 1939. The park emphasizes regional 19th century history from 1824 to 1889. It is located in southwestern Arkansas east of Texarkana and near the entrance to Interstate 30.

Okay, I really would have given four and a half stars, because there are many great old buildings here, but very few were open to tour, and should have been. Beyond that the guides we did have were friendly. And the guide for the printing presses was fabulous. He alone deserves five stars. He was so knowledgeable and passionate, well-mannered, and so friendly, that he felt like a friend we had known for years!. We loved him!
On Saturday night, we had dinner at the Tavern restaurant, and it was delicious as usual. Then we walked over to the old courthouse for "Music in the Park". The entertainment for the night was the very talented Harmony Band from Mt. View, Arkansas, and we tapped our toes to their folk and bluegrass music for 2 hours. It was a wonderful night under the stars in one of our favorite places!
This wasn't a planned visit, more of a "we have time." The time was really well spent. It was a weekday and not all of the staff was there. The ones that were gave us incredible personal attention. I feel like I know more about Historic Washington than I do about the town I live in now. I recommend the restaurant, the print shop and the armory.
We loved our visit here. Williams Tavern had great southern food and ice tea. We took a surrey ride around the community and our driver was friendly and informative. Would highly recommend
Unique historic state park. Almost an entire historic town is now a state park. Great architectural examples of antebellum and later structures. Also a good on site restaurant.
