Wall Drug, Wall

3.0
#1 of 13 in Shopping in South Dakota
Earning fame by giving free ice water to thirsty travelers, Wall Drug has become a shopping mall filled with stores, gift shops, restaurants, and attractions for kids. Take a look at its collections of items such as toys, pottery, sculptures, decorative ornaments, souvenirs, candies, and T-shirts. Snap a photo in front of an artificial Mount Rushmore, climb the giant mythical jackalope, or have a classic Western meal at the restaurant. Have a picnic, eat a doughnut, or tour the art gallery. Children can even dig mines and look for gemstones and fossils. Just beware of the dinosaurs and the singing gorilla man. • I have been to Wall Drug over the years starting as far back as 1976. If you are in South Dakota, it is hard to miss. It now as big as a small mall. Parking is spacious behind a mall of shops. Althoug...  more »
  • If your making your way to the midwest, this is a MUST SEE. Wall Drug is a very unique but what authentic mid-western store. It is however a very stereotypical place when it comes in terms of "cowboys...  more »
  • Whatever you do, please check out Wall Drug and its rich history and the story of how it originated. It has many stores built into one main store and a nice restaurant to have lunch or dinner.  more »

  • This is definitely a place you come to once and then probably never again. I counted 60 signs driving over from Rapid City, and probably missed some. Decided to stop in on the way to the Badlands for the heck of it. There is a whole street of souvenir shops. I did end up purchasing a nice ceramic mug at one of them. Lots of photo ops. Great for kids, I imagine. The inside contains a chapel, a drug store, a restaurant and ice cream shop, as well as more souvenir shops. My brother and I decided to try the donuts and the 5 cent coffee. Coffee was for sure worth the price. The donuts were pretty good, but a bit heavy. I'm glad I only had one.
  • With 650 miles of billboards, you can't not stop at Wall Drug if you're in the area. It is easily the mother of all tacky roadside gift shops. If you like roadside attractions and can accept it for what it is, Wall Drug is a lot of fun. If you come in with high expectations, prepare to be disappointed. I truly feel for the young foreign staff who must have been excited to work in and experience America until the moment they arrived in Wall, South Dakota. There's no way to beat the bush on this, but Wall seems like a really boring place to live.
  • This is a great stop on a trip to or from Badlands National Park, the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, and/or the Crazy Horse Memorial. Sure, it's a bit overblown, but it's fun and there is a little bit of history to it too. On top of that, it's convenient and memorable, with a reasonably priced breakfast, friendly people, and 5 cent coffee - who could ask for more?
  • So - we read the reviews and decided to give the place a try. We were pleasantly surprised! They have some great gifts and amazing books. We got several Christmas gifts and there were sales as well. A fun quick stop with delightful staff.
  • Always a stop for us to and from the Black Hills and it never gets old. There is always something cool to find and purchase. Food is really good and the Free Ice Water is always cold. EDIT 08OCT2017 - Stopped in for a slice of apple pie on our way to the hills and its still amazing.
