Enjoy spectacular views of crested buttes and rugged red cliffs while hiking the geological wonder that is Waimea Canyon State Park. Fondly known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” the canyon stretches over 22.5 km (14 mi) and is 1,097 m (3,600 ft) deep. Hike along the deep valley gorge to the Waimea Overlook to admire the vivid red and green coloring of the volcanic canyon and for panoramic views of the Kaua’i interior. You can rent a car to explore the area or catch a tour bus to the top of the canyon. Be sure to carry a jacket, as the area tends to be very windy. We are from Arizona and had to see The Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Sire glad we did. We did it in a helicopter and if you have the time it is unbelievable.
Our side trip by rented car took us to this remarkable scene. We drove atop a Kauai mountain for a great vantage point. I imagine the helicopter ride for viewing would be more sensational, but we sett... read more »
This is the most amazing island out of all of The Hawaiian Islands, after 8:00pm the streets roll up and you can relax on the beaches on the North Shore until sunrise. Take a couple of Cigars and a bottle of Pinot Noir and enjoy, you can also grab a few of Bubbas Burgers along the way!! Have fun!!!
This place will take your breath away. The view is massive and kind of throws you off a bit. It's so so so big. Weather changes quickly here so you'll get to see it a variety of ways. Numerous valleys and one huge waterfall.
The views are totally worth the long winding road. There are a few places to stop on the way up but they're not well marked. Especially if you want to stop somewhere to hike down. The picnic area near the top is by far the best stopping place in our opinion. Take your time driving up and down as the paved roads are narrow, steep and winding and there are tons of tourists driving and running across the roads. Totally worth the views though and an okay drive!
So much to see at this amazing park. Don't miss the scenic viewpoints. They are clearly marked off highway 550, with a couple dozen parking spaces. If you like hiking, there are several great hikes that provide sweeping views of this vast canyon.
This was a great experience and John was a great pilot. We were up, down and through the canyon. I saw waterfalls and beaches. My husband fell the day before and I was sorry he had to miss it. I got several good pictures but lost some to the reflection of the early sun on the copter windows. I'd do it again!
