Voyageurs National Park

(4.4/5 based on 150 reviews for 5 attractions)
Things to do: nature, parks

Heart of the Continent

Minnesota calls itself "The Land of 10,000 Lakes," and a good number of these lie inside of Voyageurs National Park. Whereas a car provides access into most national parks, here canoes, kayaks, and boats rule. Waterways connect to one another in this corner of the north woods, and the park's biggest landmass, the Kabetogama Peninsula, is only accessible by water vessel. Boat charters are available for visitors who don't bring their own, allowing anyone to access the park's land-based hiking and camping. Both land and water provide prime wildlife viewing; moose, wolves, black bears, white-tailed deer, foxes, otters, and snowshoe hares all make their home here, and surveys record the presence of 58 bird species on average, including eagles, each year. The park provides different scenery throughout the year, with plenty of green in the summer, colorful foliage in the fall, and white snow covering the land and frozen lakes in winter. Where to stay in Voyageurs National Park

To stay inside Voyageurs National Park, you'll need not just a tent but also a boat, kayak, or canoe since the only practical access to the park is via water. If you do have a vessel, you'll have numerous campsites scattered throughout the park to choose from. Many provide picnic tables, fire pits, and food storage lockers, and some also include vaulted toilets. If you're without a boat, or you simply prefer creature comforts, choose one of the many establishments along Lake Kabetogama. The areas around Tom Cod Bay and the Lake Kabetogama Visitors Center feature rustic lakeside lodges and outdoor resorts, many of which are geared toward anglers. International Falls to the west of the park represents the area's population center, and here you'll find numerous hotels and motels.
