Jagger Museum, Volcano

4.7
#1 of 20 in Museums in Island of Hawaii
Specialty Museum Museum
Jagger Museum offers sheltered viewing of a volcanic crater. Visit the outdoor terrace to get an even closer look inside the volcano. One of the busiest spots on the Crater Rim Drive Tour, the museum features seismographs that track volcanic activity so you'll know if an eruption is coming with plenty of time to evacuate. See suits worn by volcanologists who got a little too close to lava flows. When you park, look out for the nene, Hawaii's official bird. The geese wander the parking lot looking for snacks. Plan your visit to Jagger Museum and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Volcano trip itinerary planner.

Where to stay in Volcano

Volcano remains compact, so accommodations are pretty straightforward. Bed and breakfasts, cottages, and lodges represent most of the options here, but you'll also find a couple of hostels/budget inns. Most establishments feature traditional Polynesian architecture. Many accommodations sit near the access road to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, but a few are set a bit farther away from it.

  • Very informative museum. If you come to watch the sun set and see the caldera as it gets dark, dress warmly. 4000 foot elevation plus a stiff breeze, it was quite cold. The views were amazing.
  • Felt I was getting ripped off to see lava $250 for a helicopter or $200 for a boat tour. Our hotel concierge told us about the Jaggar Museum. This is one of the best tips, I was honestly amazed on arriving and witnessing the crater. Things only get better, wandering through the museum and learning about the Hawaiian mythology as well as scientific studies. When you step out again it's a bit darker and WOW. I wish I spent more time at the National Park.
  • End of the road for the volcano rim. Informative museum with the best views of the caldera. The lava was visible in daytime when I visited and was clearly moving.
  • Got there just before 5pm for Ranger Michael's very informative talk. It gives you a better understanding of the Volcano and it's history. Staying till after sunset gives you another incredible view. As others have said just bring another layer of clothing as it gets cold quick.
  • You can see active lava at night, how cool is that? However, some nights it may be too much smoke to see it.
