  • This is not a huge tourist stop. The visitor center is okay. I could have used quite a bit more there. Of course, it is free; so you kind of get what you pay for here. The battlefield here is kind of ...  more »

  • Went for the 2017 Luminaria on Memorial Day weekend. Volunteers placed two luminaries for every stone, and cemetery was open until 11 p.m. The park rangers gave short narratives for some of the soldiers buried there. The place is well maintained and fairly easy to get to. Definitely worth visiting.
  • The National Park Service maintains this battlefield area. Inside of Fredericksburg proper, this space is a poignant memory of the brutality of the American Civil War. 105,000 men lost their lives here over the course of four battles. The Visitors Center has an informative, interactive museum, and a 20 minute video on the battles. After the video, you can join a tour with a park ranger who will walk you through the area pointing out important locations, people, and events. Plan on about an hour here if you take the tour. Or, you can walk it in about 20 minutes. Be sure to climb the short hill to the cemetery.
  • Such fascinating and close-to-home history. The park has many relics which still stand today; it's amazing to be so close to one of the major conflict points of the Civil War.
  • Great staff at a battlefield that sometimes gets overlooked when we think about the Civil War. If you're in the area come see all of it, but if you're pressed for time at least take a Ranger led walk to learn the story, and visit Chatham Manor. The Memorial Day Illumination of the National Cemetery is especially moving.
  • easy walks through the park. jr ranger book was in order of the walking tour making it easy to complete.
