My 19 year old son suggested that we take a detour of the Cathedral of the Plains on our way from Tennessee to Colorado and so we did! Are we ever glad that we did not miss this jewel!! It not only gave us a little break from a long trip but also a heart boost!! Both boys lit a candle as I read the prayer posted next to the candles. You see, these boys were headed to work for a Christian Ministry camp and it was the exact blessing they needed for their summer! Don't miss the Cathedral of the Plains and don't miss the reading of the blessing!!! We loved this stop! Detours are good!!!
Wonderful place baptism, marriage, confirmation, and many other religious parties or celebrations. A magnificent example of the integrity of the Volga Germans and the wonders of god
Christ is truly present in this Parish
Often called the "Cathedral of the Plains", this is one of the best parts of Western Kansas. The architecture, historical preservation, and community spirit are on display. In 2014, it was designated a mini-basilica by Rome -- one of only 78 sites in the US, and the only one in Kansas. Take 30 minutes out of your road trip to turn south off I-70. Stretch your legs by walking around this beautiful church, and marvel at what some Volga Germans with no modern construction tools could do a century ago.
This cathedral is worth the stop. The church's exterior is beautiful but the interior is amazing. There is a beautiful "woven straw cross " that must be 5 or 6 feet tall, beautifully woven - I'm sure it took 100's of hours to complete. It has beautiful woven roses in the center.
