At U.S.S. Cairo Museum see one of the boats built by the North during the Civil War. The ironclad ship was constructed to help take control of the lower Mississippi River. Shortly after launching, it was was hit by two torpedoes and sank. The remains were lifted from the bottom of the Mississippi in 1962 and transported to Vicksburg. You can visit the reconstructed ship, an excellent example of early modern warfare engineering, under a shaded pavilion. Head inside to see artifacts, such as the soldiers' supplies, weapons, and munitions. Using our custom trip planner, Vicksburg attractions like U.S.S. • No matter if you have served in the military or not, this is a must see. There are no words to describe visiting this ship in person and the museum of artifacts.

  • Excellent museum and the ship which was brought up from the bottom of the river 100 years later. Displayed expertly. Fascinating history.

  • Pretty interesting place. A small museum that boasts a treasure trove of artifacts from the civil war that laid in the Mississippi for a century. Not to mention a look at (at least part of) real ironclads. Plus it's free, or rather included in your admission to the military park.
  • This is hard to get to because many of the roads in the battlefield are blocked. The NPS app says it's closed, which the actual museum and store are closed but you are still able to view the USS Cairo and walk around it. Very interesting and fascinating piece of history!!
  • I love the history of this Country!!!! To see a warship of this time up close and personal, it literally is a beast to see. The park staff are very knowledgeable and polite. The boat is one thing but the articles that were collected and catalogued from the ships, remarkable!!! It is all part of the Vicksburg National Park.
  • Fascinating history well explained. The museum wasn't open but the ship itself is amazing. You can walk right through it and all the way around.
  • Excellent piece of history to walk around and onto. Something interesting to read the history of. The museum tells the rest of the story about the Cairo and the men who operated it.
