U.S.S. Cairo Museum, Vicksburg

At U.S.S. Cairo Museum see one of the boats built by the North during the Civil War. The ironclad ship was constructed to help take control of the lower Mississippi River. Shortly after launching, it was was hit by two torpedoes and sank. The remains were lifted from the bottom of the Mississippi in 1962 and transported to Vicksburg. • This is a testament to the determination of America to raise and restore this old ship. Within the grounds of the Civil War Memorial Park it is a fitting place for the ship. The video showing the effo...  more »

  • Must see destination in Vicksburg. Such a cool piece of history. A rare glimpse of an old Ironsides battle ship from Civil War era.we wish we spent some more time around the exhibit but we were on s tight schedule. The rest of the park was also greatness. Let your imagination go wild here as history will come alive!
  • The museum was the highlight of our trip to Vicksburg. We enjoyed the military park as a whole. It the Cairo was the icing on the cake. So many artifacts, a lot of information, and the restoration of the ship was done in a way that allows you to see all the working parts of the ship.
  • Really very interesting, from the civil war history to the history of resurrecting the Cairo! We went to Cairo before entering the Vicksburg National Military Park at the main visitor center. Wished we would have started at the Military Park visitor center first due to routing through the park bringing you right to Cairo at the end!
  • A fantastic and informative inclusion with the information from the military park. It really allows you to see and understand the naval elements of the siege that go along with the land based battlefield.
  • What an incredible piece of history on display. The museum and the battlefield were a great way to spend the day.
