At U.S.S. Cairo Museum see one of the boats built by the North during the Civil War. The ironclad ship was constructed to help take control of the lower Mississippi River. Shortly after launching, it was was hit by two torpedoes and sank. The remains were lifted from the bottom of the Mississippi in 1962 and transported to Vicksburg. You can visit the reconstructed ship, an excellent example of early modern warfare engineering, under a shaded pavilion. Head inside to see artifacts, such as the soldiers' supplies, weapons, and munitions. • Hadn't planned on stopping here, but it was included in our tour. Nice museum inside. But I must admit the ship itself is quite remarkable and worth a visit.
  • Impressive reconstruction of the Ironclad. The exposed engineering design is quite amazing considering you are looking at something made over 150 years ago. Sign says 7 were made at a cost of about 110K each. Took 100 days to make them.
  • Wonderful reconstruction of iron clad warship with original wood and structure in place. Explanations of mechanical systems with original parts exposed. You can walk onto the ship as well as around it. Small museum with samples of clothing, weapons, shoes, nautical bits, personal items from ship. Easy to visit in 15-30 minutes. Don't miss this. You can bail on the 16 mile drive before this museum but you'd really miss something special. Very kid friendly and clean restrooms along with small gift shop.
  • It amazing. They still let you walk threw and take pictures
  • Awesome ironclad!
  • It is a wonderful place to visit but make sure you have the time to stop and check out the musem. One day I would like to go back there and check and see if any of my family is there and if they fought for the north or the south in the battle of Vicksburgs
