U.S.S. Cairo Museum, Vicksburg

4.8
At U.S.S. Cairo Museum see one of the boats built by the North during the Civil War. The ironclad ship was constructed to help take control of the lower Mississippi River. Shortly after launching, it was was hit by two torpedoes and sank. The remains were lifted from the bottom of the Mississippi in 1962 and transported to Vicksburg. You can visit the reconstructed ship, an excellent example of early modern warfare engineering, under a shaded pavilion. Head inside to see artifacts, such as the soldiers' supplies, weapons, and munitions. Using our custom trip planner, Vicksburg attractions like U.S.S. Who is interested in history here at the right place. The ship can be entered. We have seen the small museum in 15 minutes. Staff explain they like everything. The Museum costs nothing. Sufficient free parking. Once seen, that's enough. :)

This is the last iron-clad, and they've done a terrific job of raising, restoring and displaying it. With most of the metal "skin" removed, you can go aboard and see its workings - the boilers, piston...  more »

Helped us understand some of the battles. Did not understand the scope of the naval battles, until seeing this exhibit.  more »

This was a unique experience. Not only can you look at a Civil War ship, you can walk inside it (or, what's left of it). The inside of the museum holds all manner of unique items that were found on the ship after it was recovered. Each item is labeled so you know exactly what you're looking at. If you're visiting Vicksburg Military Park, plan on stopping here. You can't miss it. We hadn't planned on visiting because we didn't realize how close it was to Vicksburg, but it ended up being my favorite stop of the day!

If nothing else, the sheer size of the ship is impressive. So much of it was preserved by the mud that you can see details of the forgings. The artifacts in the museum are enlightening as you see the details of the personal possessions used be the crew. I was amazed at the variety of cannon used on a single ship, which would have complicated supply. Well worth a stop if you are in the area.

The main attraction is the USS Cairo itself - wonderfully preserved and surrounded by informational placards. Guests are able to walk aboard a restored portion of the vessel to get a more personal look. The adjacent museum is full of additional artifacts found around the wreck, as well as information about the Cairo's discovery and raising. Amenities include AC (much needed by this visitor in the Mississippi heat), water fountains that run cold water, and clean, comfortable restrooms. There's also a gift shop if you are so inclined.

Amazing location. The reconstruction and preservation of the ironclad is well done and adds to the grandness of this vessel. I never really understood the size and scale of an ironclad until visiting the USS Cairo.

Really cool civil war ironclad ship and museum. I've learned about them before on school but never have seen one in person. Very awe inspiring and very high tech for its day.
