U.S.S. Cairo Museum, Vicksburg

(4.7/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
At U.S.S. Cairo Museum see one of the boats built by the North during the Civil War. The ironclad ship was constructed to help take control of the lower Mississippi River. Shortly after launching, it was was hit by two torpedoes and sank. The remains were lifted from the bottom of the Mississippi in 1962 and transported to Vicksburg. You can visit the reconstructed ship, an excellent example of early modern warfare engineering, under a shaded pavilion. Head inside to see artifacts, such as the soldiers' supplies, weapons, and munitions. • Vicksburg Military Park located to reach the ship, that is outdoors with the car. It was sunk during the civil war, later salvaged and reconstructed. So you get a good idea of the mode of operation, size and appearance of the gunboats of the United States Army. Next door is another small museum with other found objects and information about the USS Cairo

  • This is an incredible restoration project. we were very surprised to find it, since we thought we would miss it by taking the driving tour.
  • The story of the rescue and restoration of this ironclad ship is quite fascinating. Allow time to meander around the ship and then visit the small but great museum next to it. Viewing the artifacts of...  more »

  • Great getaway. Great atmosphere. I go at least four times a year
  • The best tour stop in in the state! No other “Brown Water Navy” gunboat anywhere.
  • Very nice. We learned a lot. Friendly Rangers. Highly recommended
  • This single attraction is worth the price of the entire tour. If I had it do do over I would skip the driving your and go straight here. Amazing.
  • Worth the stop since already paid to get in. The staff happily answered all my questions. Free tour with knowledgeable guide at 10:00am and 2:00pm
