McKee Botanical Garden, Vero Beach

4.6
#1 of 6 in Parks in Vero Beach
See one of the biggest outdoor collections of water lilies in the United States at McKee Botanical Garden, a subtropical garden filled with local and exotic plant species that was founded in 1929. The garden was a popular attraction after it opened in 1932, but was closed for about 25 years until 2001, when it was refurbished. Now you'll find vast groups of water lilies, bromeliads, pineapple plants, plumbago, tall palm trees, and other fragrant vegetation. Explore the hall of the giants, a Polynesian-styled ceremonial palace built by one of the garden's founders, Waldo E. Sexton, out of cypress and pine. The palace contains an 11 m (35 foot) table made from a single piece of mahogany. • A peaceful nature area loaded with history and a diverse array is trees, shrubs, and flowers. Be aware of your footing as snakes are a common sight while walking the grounds. Be sure to check out the historical buildings and the largest mahogany slab table. A great way to spend an hour or two.
  • The Night of Lights was amazing. A bit crowded, but that was to be expected. Give yourself at least an hour if you go. There is also a very cool train demo and the Stickworks was incredible. Can't believe I've never been here before.
  • Strolled through Lights Exhibit just a delightful evening. Parked in shopping plaza before entrance and walked in because traffic jam at 6:15 pm going no where. Even 82 year old Mother said walk was doeable Fun 3d glasses made lights dance took lots of pictures
  • Great place to get the kids outdoors, especially since they have a reasonably priced family membership. My toddler loves the animals of Africa exhibit currently displayed, but even without that it's a fun place to visit!
  • Seasonal exhibits, numerous gorgeous varieties of water lillies, orchids, and other tropical plants along meandering paths in a natural environment. Absolutely fantastic. A photographer's paradise.
