McKee Botanical Garden, Vero Beach
(4.5/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
See one of the biggest outdoor collections of water lilies in the United States at McKee Botanical Garden, a subtropical garden filled with local and exotic plant species that was founded in 1929. The garden was a popular attraction after it opened in 1932, but was closed for about 25 years until 2001, when it was refurbished. Now you'll find vast groups of water lilies, bromeliads, pineapple plants, plumbago, tall palm trees, and other fragrant vegetation. Explore the hall of the giants, a Polynesian-styled ceremonial palace built by one of the garden's founders, Waldo E. Sexton, out of cypress and pine. The palace contains an 11 m (35 foot) table made from a single piece of mahogany. • Beautiful even after hurricane Matthew. Peaceful, lots of history, makes you smile! The place is amazing and should be on the national registry.

  • Cool buildings. Pathways through exotic trees and bushes. Wildlife all over if you look carefully.
  • A gem. We enjoyed their dedication to trying to show true Florida without it being totally wild. The handicap scooters were a pleasant surprise, allowing my mother to enjoy the whole garden, rather than having to sit close to the entrance waiting for me to finish looking at everything, like she has to do most of the time. Thanks for a pleasurable afternoon.
  • I was so impressed on how beautiful and peaceful this garden was. And how much history is here, in this one spot. This is a must see for anyone who loves Flowers, Florida, or just having a nice walk. If I could have sat on the stone bridge over the lily pond all day, I would have.
  • My mother has lived in Vero Beach for 17 years and has never been to McKee, so my girlfriend and I brought my mom and she loved the amazing dinosaur exhibit. She took lots of pictures and enjoyed learning about the history of the garden. She was smiling the entire time, looking at the flowers, plants, trees, and waterfalls. I don't think I remember her being so happy in recent years. For this reason I gave McKee a five star review, for the happiness and enjoyment they brought to my mom. I recommend this place for the entire family.
  • Beautiful gardens & super friendly staff. So much to see & many places to just sit & relax. The largest water lily collection in the U.S.
