McKee Botanical Garden, Vero Beach

4.6
Garden · Nature / Park
See one of the biggest outdoor collections of water lilies in the United States at McKee Botanical Garden, a subtropical garden filled with local and exotic plant species that was founded in 1929. The garden was a popular attraction after it opened in 1932, but was closed for about 25 years until 2001, when it was refurbished. Now you'll find vast groups of water lilies, bromeliads, pineapple plants, plumbago, tall palm trees, and other fragrant vegetation. Explore the hall of the giants, a Polynesian-styled ceremonial palace built by one of the garden's founders, Waldo E. Sexton, out of cypress and pine. The palace contains an 11 m (35 foot) table made from a single piece of mahogany. • Very natural looking but well maintained gardens. Trails are shaded. Meander throughout the gardens along fish and Lily ponds. Nice retreat from the beach. This summer (2019) they are opening a kids area that looks like it will be a lot of fun for the kids. Recommend for 1.5 hrs or so, if taking a leisurely stroll through (without the kid section - I am sure that will keep the little ones occupied for longer.)
  • Beautiful place! McKee Botanical gardens has all types of flowers, ferns, water lilies and plants. The ponds are beautiful. We met the Curator of Orchids while we were here, she showed us one of the oldest and largest orchids on the site. The Bamboo Pavilion is great to sit for a while. The Hall of Giants and Spanish Kitchen are must-sees as well. Make sure to not miss a walkway, every walk has different and beautiful plants.
  • My family and I love coming here! The garden is the perfect size to stroll through without little legs getting tired. It's truly a great place for all ages. The gardens are very well kept with lots of variety. The staff is friendly and there is lots of shade. It's definitely worth the trip.
  • I loved exploring this place. So many plants and all nicely named with details of where they came from. Nice little restaurant and waterfalls. I can't wait till September when they open the children's garden!
  • Friendly knowledge staff. They are in the process of expanding and upgrading exhibits. They are creating a new children's area. When its done it will definitely be a place for the whole family.
