The City Of Ten Thousand Buddhas is an international Buddhist community and monastery founded by Hsuan Hua, an important figure in Western Buddhism. It is one of the first Chinese Zen Buddhist temples in the United States, and one of the largest Buddhist communities in the Western Hemisphere. The city is situated in Talmage, Mendocino County, California, about 2mi east of Ukiah, and 110 miles (180 km) north of San Francisco. The city is noted for its close adherence to the vinaya, the austere traditional Buddhist monastic code.HistoryThe Dharma Realm Buddhist Association purchased the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas site in 1974 and established an international center there by 1976. In 1979, the Third Threefold Ordination Ceremony at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas was held where monks from China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and the US transmitted the precepts. It was considered unique as it represented both the Mahayana and Theravada traditions.

  • Maybe IF you are a Buddhist this place would be more exciting but I am not. It was pleasant and nice but a bit dull after the build up from ALL the other reviews. Informative, yes. Nice gounds. And, a...  more »
  • A place where gives you power inside of your heart. Peaceful, wordless but you would get a lot more than someone speaks to you and tell you. Hard to explain, just use heart to listen.  more »
  • The Abbot of Ten Thousand Buddhas invited the Abhayagiri monks to take refuge during the recent fires. What a wonderful thing to do. While there we were able to witness a morning dharma chant and part...  more »

  • The Temple of 10,000 Buddhas is magical. Not only that the whole property (of aprox 300 acres!), is simply beautiful, but the temple itself is amazing in spiritual energy, great for purification and speedy awakening. The food is delicious, and pretty much all you can eat! I'm coming back soon to experience a whole month of goodness!
  • Really neat place. Not anything I was expecting to find tucked away into the NorCal woods. The grounds are mostly closed to visitors, but one can walk around the temple, gardens and restaurant. The admin building allows visitors entry to the gallery (place to learn about the site) and the bookstore. The temple is open to visitors and photos are allowed word Dharma talks are not on session, but taking pictures still felt a bit disrespectul as there are worshippers meditating. With the stop 2 miles from Hwy 101.
  • The tranquil environment of the city of ten thousand buhdas it really is a must see. The peacocks are beautiful. Other places in the location are the local vegan restraunt and college that has a gift shop.
  • Beautiful, peaceful place. Great schools. Best vegetarian restaurant.
  • Loved it. Can't wait to return.
