The Wild Center, Tupper Lake

4.4
The Wild Center is located in the Adirondacks in northern New York. The Adirondacks are unique in the world. Surrounded by people, they house great expanses of nature interspersed with small towns and communities. They can be an example for a future where man and the rest of the natural world find better ways to coexist.

The Wild Center is dedicated to understanding this rare place, is committed to helping people explore not a small collection, but one that lives and breathes across the entire expanse of the Adirondacks. The Wild Center is science-based, and its experiences, exhibits and programs are designed to open new ways to look into the latest discoveries made by natural scientists.

There may be no more important issue than discovering better ways to coexist with the rest of the natural world, and there may be no better place to understand that effort than in the Adirondacks.

Go to the Wild Center! You will not be disappointed. Yes, they have the spectacular Wild Walk, but personally, I think the otters (I generally spend at least an hour watching them swim) and the iFores...  more »

There is a lot of information ranging from different types of fungus to the life of an otter. Along the tree top excursion you can continually be educated about the surrounding environment. Ground trails are well maintained and are clearly marked when trails outside of the center intersect them. The parking lot is spacious and hard topped; easy to traverse. I got a Mediterranean Salad for lunch. It was VERY crisp and quite a lot for the price (which was less than I expected!) Overall it was a good experience and I feel like I got a bang for my buck. :-)

The Wild Center is one of our "Must-Go-To" destinations whenever we are up in the area. As many times as we have been here, we always find something new and interesting. We stumbled upon the new music trail quite by accident. It was quite an experience. Don't be fooled by other reviews that say the place is geared mostly to kids. While there is plenty for the kids to do, and my sister's kids loved it by the way, the wild center has a great deal to offer adults without kids as well. The entire facility, indoors and out, offers a lot of opportunity to take pictures. The restrooms are kept clean. The entire facility is ADA accessible, even the nature trails. There are wheelchairs available for visitor use free of charge. This was very useful on a previous trip when a friend of ours hurt her knee while skiing the day before. Be sure to check out the gift shop before you leave. The Wild Center is well worth the price of admission.

Nice, but geared for kids. The Wild Center is a learning and discovery type place. Various animals in simulated environments, skeletons, lots of things to read. Even an adorable (but smelly) otter! Outside is a very nicely done elevated walkway that takes you up over the grounds where you can look out and see birds, different types of vegetation (with signage explaining it's significance) and if you're lucky maybe an animal. In addition there are some walking trails around the property which we found really pleasant. It's a worthwhile stop for anyone who appreciates nature and animals (and if you don't like that stuff, why exactly are you in the Adirondacks?) but it's especially suited to kids. As two adults without kids, we enjoyed it but wouldn't rush to get back. Still 4-star for the work that went into it, the adorable otter, and the beautiful grounds.

Really great museum. The "Wild Walk" outside is really nice and enjoyable for kids and adults! There is also an optional easy "hike" through the woods to some nice lookout points. Inside the exhibits have a lot if info to read, if you'd like, but kids could also be entertained and educated by looking and listening to the exhibits without reading all of the text. There's a nice theater inside that shows short (7-10 min) videos throughout the day. There is also a gift shop and a cafe. Definitely would recommend visiting this museum while in the ADKS!

Great place to visit. We arrived on a beautiful summer day, and spent almost 6 hours walking the entire grounds. We had a wonderful time, and really enjoyed the visit to the museum which we saved for last. (Which I recommend, the air conditioning is a good way to finish a long hike. ) If there was an event we wanted to attend there, I would go again without hesitation! Edit: Bring a lunch in a cooler, there is a small snack bar but that's it, and almost nothing around nearby where you can grab a fast bite. Also, bring a water bottle, the hikes are long and a little water is always a good idea to bring with when walking long distance.
