  • Coalmine Canyon is in Navajo territory; but the access to the overlook is on public lands. Do not try to go down into the canyon. The best moment to see it is at sunset: fantastic colors !  more »
  • During a stop in tuba city, you should most definitely the coal mine visit Canyon, the is divided into the upper and the lower coal mine Canyon. The upper coal mine Canyon reached tuba city from after about 15 miles trip to AZ Hwy 264 just before milepost 337 and turn left on the dirt road gravely. Even Max Park approximately 0.25 miles and drive from there. A good clue is the wind turbine standing close to the Canyonrim. You can see the Canyon only after passing of the gangplank. There are several worthwhile viewpoints with beautiful views into the Canyon along the Canyonrim. Ideal photo point is in the (late) afternoon, because the Canyon then offers its greatest brilliance of colours. At noon the colours come to the rights – to hard light. Note: to reach approximately 1.1 miles on Hwy then the right branch to the coal mine chapter, you went definitely too far. On the Canyonrim, you need no permit, a descent of the Canyon is allowed only by permit. The rock at the rim is rel. fragile. To the lower coal mine Canyon and go to the HA HO No. going Canyon CA 3..3, 5 miles along AZ 264. Right at the sign "Hotevilla 27 miles, Kearns Canyon 63 miles" North turn - about on height Milemarker 340. At first approx. 3 miles (one-way) this dirt road it passes several fork (after approx. 1.2 / 2.1 / 2.9 miles), the links lead to different viewpoints overlooking the very colourful lower coal mine Canyon. On the other side of the dirt road it sometimes approaches the HA HO No. go Canyon, in which are many colorful Hoodoos of different rock layers. Also here is the ideal photo time of (late) afternoon. To avoid the dirt road rain / mud etc., because otherwise no longer to get back the Hill / slope. Because both Canyon parts fortunately still rel. are unknown, there are hardly any tourists. During our visit, we were completely alone.

  • Remote fascinating Canyon. Road is not for the faint of heart or standard au5omobiles. Drive with care and you will not have a problem. The silence and being semi alone after visiting the Grand Canyon...  more »
