#9 of 9 in Things to do in Trenton
Cadwalader Park is a city park located in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The nearly 100acre green space is Trenton's oldest park. It is named for Thomas Cadwalader, who lived for a while near Trenton where he became the chief burgess in 1746. Trenton's "central park" was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.Work on the park was begun in 1887, following the purchase of Ellarslie Mansion from George Farlee. a committee of the Common Council for the city of Trenton sought a location for what would become the City Park, and contacted Olmsted. Though perhaps best known for his design of Central Park in New York, Olmsted applied the same approach in the design of Cadwalader Park. The Mansion, which houses the Trenton City Museum, is at the center of the park.At one time the park had a train stop along the long gone Belvidere-Delaware Railroad. The park has a deer paddock, a stream, a small lake and hundreds of trees, including some that are rare at this latitude. An arm of the Delaware & Raritan Canal flows through the park. Neighborhoods bordering the park include Cadwalader Heights, Hiltonia, Hillcrest and Parkside.

  • If you enjoy living life on the dangerous side, then go to Cadwalder Park. It was a great place when i was growing up but today it is left in disrepair.  more »
  • Google cadwalader park and you will see what it once was. The park is now a mess. The area is wrought with crime. If you have been here don't depress yourself. If you never have been, don't bother. Ho...  more »
  • The park is nice and usually quiet. We have been there several times and once we toured the museum that is in the middle of the park. Very nice history lesson since we are not originally from NJ  more »

  • Years ago this park was very nice and safe, now I'm not so sure. The area has changed drastically (downhill). I have a lot of nice memories of this park when I was growing up. There used to be all sorts of animals here, including bears. It was like a mini zoo. I drive past here every day on the way to work but now it just looks like a typical park in the middle of a ghetto. Its sad.
  • Love it since a kid !!! Even though the animals and the rides aren't there anymore, I still enjoy the atmosphere.
  • One of two Historic City Owned Parks in Trenton designed by the "Father of Landscape Architecture" Frederick Law Olmsted. Needs some maintenance, under utilized. Gathering space for recreation. Excellent place for a walk, picnic or relaxing. Basketball courts, regionally recognized tennis courts/programs, softball/baseball fields, walking trails. Museum with a permanent colletion of historic artifacts, art gallery and shop, bathrooms and meeting space. Host location for various events from Spring to Fall.
  • Large open Green space. Small playground, bike trail and duck pond. . Free to walk all over the park
  • The park is spread out with many different sections. I take my daughter and my dog there for exercise on the residential side. Very safe
