  • The ambiance was awesome. Great little shops throughout. Definitely recommend making this a must see. The fact that this was an old state asylum makes it that much more interesting.

  • I came out to the village to walk around and explore while my husband was at a conference. It is very interesting how they have re-developed this state psychiatric hospital. There are shops, coffee...

  • A must-see spot in traverse city.
  • We took a tour with Katherine. She was a very informed and engaging tour guide. I learned a lot from her. I would recommend this tour to anyone! My only complaint was it was hard to figure out where to go for the tour. There are no signs at all on the outside of the building and I struggled figuring out where to go. (Signs on the inside are great though)
  • Excellent tour today by Joe Kilpatrick of The Village at Grand Traverse Commons which used to be a mental health Asylum. Incredible insight with a unique lens in looking at treating mental health. There was never a boring moment with Joe as he shared so much rich history. As a Traverse City native, Joe ended up being more than a tour guide as he deeply empathized with mental health treatments and had a relation with the patients growing up. Inspiring story of Joe in respect to his advocacy and first hand experience with the hospital (without having been a patient).
  • Great food and shopping in a beautiful community setting! The grounds and the buildings are beautiful! I enjoy walking on the grounds as well as visiting the eateries and shops. There are many special events throughout the year and the farm market is one of my favorites.
  • Our tour of the the Village at Grand Traverse Commons was one of the best experiences I have ever had. Period. Our guide, Vanessa, actually grew up a few blocks from the commons when it was an insane asylum. Her father was superintendent of the hospital for many years, and wow, the tales she had to tell! It wasn't just her vast knowledge that was impressive. It was her wonderful delivery--filled with heart, passion, music (yes, she sings!), and humor. As for the site itself: what a remarkable slice of history. The tour takes you around the grounds, inside a not-yet-renovated building where you can really get a sense of what life was like for the patients, and even below the structures through the underground tunnels that were built for ventilation. WEAR GOOD WALKING SHOES. And be prepared to soak in more information in 2 hours than you ever thought possible. This is an exceptional experience. DON'T MISS IT.
