  • We spent quite a while here, listening to an interesting talk by one of the Rangers and reading the survival stories. The view from the observatory is amazing.  more »
  • Incredible views right opposite the crater. Lots of good information boards. Inside there was a small shop, a model, some info boards and a short informational movie (nothing you can't see on youtube)...  more »
  • Although I have been visiting Washington State since 1980 when the great mountain erupted, this was my first trip dedicated to exploring Mount St. Helens. The drive to Johnston Ridge is scenic and edu...  more »

  • Fantastic views, guided ranger talks are scheduled throughout the day. The observatory itself has a nice display as well as a couple large format movies that are well done. Handicap accessible with bathrooms and a large parking lot. The standard entrance fee was $8.00 for an adult without a national park pass but well worth the view alone. One of the awesome things about this observatory is it allows you to essentially drive to within 5 miles of the crater and close to the same elevation as the growing dome making for a very impressive view.
  • Love visiting here, worth the $5 per person admittance fee. Plenty of easy walking trails that are paved as well ad hiking trails to the new lakes. There is a food vendor there but pricey. National park so no animals allowed even on a leash not allowed. Food items you pack in, pack out as with everything else, leave nothing behind.
  • For a low price of $8, you get to bask in the amazing views of Mt. St. Helens. We constantly saw the mountain on our drive up, little did we know we’d come face to face with it when we arrived at the observatory. This place is great for families. There’s an educational part and an adventurous part! You get to learn about the eruption in their exhibit and you get to hike the hills and valley overlooking the mountain!
  • Great view of north side of Mt. St. Helen's and engaging ranger talk about the history of the area and the eruption. The exhibits are nice (we especially liked the seismograph set up to measure the "earthquakes" we created by jumping), but a little dated. I would like to see more hands on exhibits for kids, but it is definitely worth the trip.
  • Great view of Mount St. Helen's (even though it was too smokey/foggy to see while we were there). The drive up is very scenic and peaceful. The guide talk was interesting and the photos and stories give you a sense of what it was like to live though the eruption. You can skip the video though, it's old and not very well done.
