The Western Museum of Flight is an aviation museum located at Zamperini Field, the municipal airport in Torrance, California. WMOF is operated by the Southern California Historical Aviation Foundation. It houses not only historic aircraft, many of which were built in Southern California, but also has an extensive collection of historic photographs and blueprints. The museum has several rare aircraft among its collection, including one of only two Northrop YF-23 stealth fighter prototypes. Also on display is a Northrop YF-17 Cobra, a lightweight fighter which was the basis for the heavier Boeing F/A-18 Hornet currently used by the United States Navy and Marine Corps. In addition, a Grumman F-14 Tomcat and a Northrop JB-1 are both on public display, plus numerous other notable jet- and propeller-drive airplanes.

  • After living in the South Bay Area for decades, I finally visited the museum which I learned moved to the current site 8 years ago from the Hawthorne airport. I have to say that if you have any intere...  more »
  • It's a small museum. The hanger has a lot of interesting things to look at and there are always a few dozens around to help with questions and the entry fee is only $5. There is around a dozen planes,...  more »
  • Very nice small Aviation Museum, staff is very enthusiastic to help introduce you to some of the plane's history, there are some small souvenirs can be bought to take home too! Worth around casually to see!

  • What a terrific gem! It isn't the largest aviation museum, by any means, but it has some rare treasures on display, for example one of two YF-23s ever made. Some of the aircraft, like the YF-23 and a YF-17, are on a back lot; ask nicely and a volunteer will show you around. There is also a large library with innumerable aviation books and a very fairly priced gift shop. If you are in the area and even slightly interested in aviation, then this is a must see museum.
  • Fun place to visit. Dedicated staff that is able to answer all questions and give some extra information. Ongoing events.
  • Nice little museum with nice ppl who ive been told are volunteers. They may be small but they got fun exhibits including real cockpit you can sit in. :)
  • There are many exhibits to see. The space section is expanding! You can sit in a fighter jet or find books on air history in their gift shop. A five dollar donation is requested for adults. The volunteers are enthusiastic and able to answer questions. There is also a talk once a month I find very enriching.
  • This place isn't very large, but if you're into planes and flight in general, it's interesting. If you have kids it's good for them to be able to see some real aircraft, some of which they can climb into the cockpit and play with the controls. You can also sit along the runway and watch small planes fly in and out of Torrance Airport.
