Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park, Tombstone

4.4
Visit Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park for a glimpse into the history of the Old West in this historic silver mining town. The two-story brick structure that looks like a Roman cross was once Cochise County's jail, and included courtrooms and offices for the sheriff, treasurer, and board of supervisors. Built in 1882, it now houses exhibits that describe life for the miners, cattlemen, and pioneers who built Tombstone. Exhibits include a tax license for the operation of a brothel, a replica of the original gallows that stood in the courthouse courtyard, and many examples of firearms owned and used by the pioneers during the mining boom. The site offers numerous shaded picnic areas. • We enjoyed the Courthouse with all its history, and spent a couple of hours here. The docents were friendly. We were able to take pictures here.  more »
  • For me this is my type of local museum. You get a good overview of how the area grew over the years not just one or two things. Can it be freshened up the exhibits and the place? Yes but it does have ...  more »
  • So much history on display in this building, in many separate rooms. The courtroom is a real treat, a great exercise in reliving history imaging what had happened through the years in there. The gallo...  more »

  • Cool artifacts and the employees were dressed up in clothes that matched the time period the place was in use. Don't bring in your stroller. There isn't enough room when it's crowded. And don't forget to check out the gallows.
  • This was a nice little town. Of course it has history, but the price gouging isn't so cool just to see dirt, wood and sites. I e been to many other towns like this with history and never saw such prices. Be prepared to open your wallet if you're a big family...
  • Wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The history is well presented, and dialogue easily understood and informative. Well worth the visit.
  • A must see tons of history very interesting staff very friendly and can answer questions gift shop has lots of nice things to pick from.
  • Very neat to see lots of history. The building is beautiful but a bit creepy. The gallows are out back but are rebuilt.

Where to stay in Tombstone

Tombstone may bill itself as the "Town Too Tough to Die," but there's nothing too tough about its accommodations. This frontier town offers a good selection of affordable inns and small motels providing every comfort of home in or near the historic central district. Most of the town's bed and breakfasts provide cable TV, free Wi-Fi, and access to a private swimming pool. For a more rustic "Wild West" experience, pitch a tent at one of Tombstone's campgrounds.
