Timberline Lodge is a mountain lodge on the south side of Mount Hood in Clackamas County, Oregon, about 60 miles (97 km) east of Portland. Constructed from 1936 to 1938 by the Works Progress Administration, it was built and furnished by local artisans during the Great Depression. Timberline Lodge was dedicated September 28, 1937, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The National Historic Landmark sits at an elevation of 5,960 feet (1,817 m), within the Mount Hood National Forest and is accessible through the Mount Hood Scenic Byway. Publicly owned and privately operated, Timberline Lodge is a popular tourist attraction that draws two million visitors annually. It is notable in film for serving as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining (1980).

The lodge and its grounds host a ski resort, also known as Timberline Lodge. It has the longest skiing season in the U.S., and is open for skiers and snowboarders all 12 months of the year. Activities include skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, and climbing.

  • Every time I have ever gone to Oregon, a trip to Timberline is a definite. The ambience, the food, the history all make for a great place to visit - for a day or for a stay. Just love this place!

  • Beautiful drove there & back. Mount Hood had minimal snow on it here in mid-September, but it was still lovely on a pleasantly warm day. Walking through the historic Timberline Lodge was a real treat. So many little things to stop and look at in there. We even caught glimpse of a resident, attentive Saint Bernard dog following around his favorite handler of the day. Nice!
  • The staff here were super friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. They made everything very streamlined, and they all seemed to love working here! The trails were very well marked and all of their signage and directions were easy to follow and super useful no matter your riding level. We tried the Gravy Train Trail which was the ‘beginner trail’ and it offered a great starting course and even as beginner/ moderate riders we were pleasantly challenged yet found ourselves speeding through it after a few runs and then moved onto The Rock and other blue level trails which were a blast as well and definitely a step up. We went to other nearby riding lodges on this trip to OR and not one beat the experience at Timberline Lodge! We will be back again!
  • Great breakfast buffet but would be nice to see some gluten free options for those that require it. The Timberline Lodge is on the PCT and let's hikers come in, sit in the seating area to charge phones, etc. Has a little corner in the back where they can seat you for the restaurant without making you feel like you don't belong. The servers and staff are well trained and provide great service whether or not you are a regular guest or hiker. Would definitely comeback.
  • It's the location. The hotel itself is old and nevertheless a must see. So it is worth the drive up to the lodge. The place got even more fame because a part of the movie The Shining was shot here. It is indeed the Overlook Hotel. But the most beautiful thing is the view to Mount Hood.
  • Our group of seniors who love Jesus Christ went to the mountain together in our bus. We were blessed with perfect weather, caring fellows, lots of laughter and I was served the BEST hot chocolate that I've ever had. It had a Heath candy bar in it. The lift was manned by compassionate young men who slowed or stopped the whole set of chairs for those saints using canes to walk. The views yesterday were vast and beautiful in spite of haze. Go!
