Visit Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, one of the world's leading natural sponge markets. Since 1890, the sponge harvesting industry had been developing in this small seaside resort. Divers from Greece were brought to the United States, and they would use diving equipment to collect these aquatic animals and prepare them for sale. At the beginning of the 20th century, the resort became known as the Sponge Capital of the World. Today, you can learn about the sponge harvesting industry at the site, hear about its history, and buy sponges to use for bathing, decorating, and cleaning. Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , online itinerary creator Edition.

We went to the "factory" and watched the interesting short film on sponge diving. I was highly impressed. It was also very interesting to see the men at work at the dock.

So cool to see the boats with all the sponges. One even shared a name with my daughter. Very relaxing space.

It was a pleasant stroll. A little bit touristy area, but still has a character. Sponges, sponges everywhere.

So much fun seeing the sponges hanging on the boats, having just been harvested from the ocean. A Greek community where they’ve been diving for sponges since the 1890’s. Great Greek restaurants and bakeries. Lots of cool shops to investigate. If you’re in the area, don’t miss out on a fun day. Enjoy!!!

Great place to walk if you don't mind paying for parking or the trolley. It's a very Greek district and they're proud of it, with plenty of Greek restaurants. Sponges around here because, well, it's the sponge docks. Restaurants are great but gift shops sell more or less the same stuff, which is great if you love handmade goat milk soap, Tarpon Springs shirts, and reversible plush octopuses. We didn't go on the dolphin tours but considering how many there are, you'll not be at a loss for choice here.

Historic area of what was once one of Florida’s most powerful industries. It has a notable Greek influence because Greek immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s became the backbone of the trade and helped build the community. It was quaint and peaceful when I visited in late summer. There was music floating through the streets and there are restaurants and shops on every corner. Bustling with people but wasn’t too crowded.

The sponge docks are so much fun! So many cool stores to browse through and the best bakery you've ever enjoyed pastries from before! The seafood Festival had many interesting things to look at. I'll go back next time I'm in town!

This is a great place for booking activities on the water, enjoying Greek Food, shopping and more. Also watch for good deals on parking, there are some areas for $5 all day. Lots of fun!
