Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Tampa

#2 of 211 in Things to do in Tampa
Bridge · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Sunshine Skyway Bridge, considered the "flag bridge" of Florida, stretches across Tampa Bay and features a cable-stayed main span. The original bridge was built in 1954, but construction on the current bridge began in 1982 and it was re-opened in 1987. Many visitors love crossing the bridge to take in views over the water. You must pay a small toll, but it's worth it to snap a few photos from this spot. You can stop at a nearby park on the St. Petersburg side of the bridge to rest, swim, or have a picnic. • We drove over the bridge during our stay in the area. It provides great views. It looks really pretty lit up at night too, especially from the Skyway Pier.  more »
  • A wonderful feat of engineering and design at the mouth of the Tampa Bay. I have two preferred observation modes: 1 - on land at night - St Pete side 2 - in the passenger seat with my eyes tightly...  more »

  • When I hit this. Coming from the south I know I'm home been in Tampa Bay since birth and I remember the original Skyway this place is an iconic Tampa Bay structure and the construction of this bridge is bar none you can see it from miles and miles on a clear day in the bay HOME!!!
  • Absolutely beautiful!! I didn't know it was there until I drove up on it on the way to play golf from Clearwater going to Bradenton and it was amazing to see it then drive over
  • A perfect spot to catch a number of species of game fish in one location.
  • The remains of the old bridge are now a pier you can drive and park.At the end is a bait and tackle shop. While casting toward the new bridge, a dolphin surfaced and walked backwards on his tailfins, talking like "Flipper"! My teen daughter and her girlfriend were thrilled. Depending on your bait and might catch anything from a tiny pinfish to a 400 lb. Jewfish.
  • The Sunshine skyway is a beautiful bridge. It's Very well taken care of. And what a beautiful view. I love Florida 🥰
