Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Tampa

(4.5/5 based on 2,600+ reviews on the web)
Sunshine Skyway Bridge, considered the "flag bridge" of Florida, stretches across Tampa Bay and features a cable-stayed main span. The original bridge was built in 1954, but construction on the current bridge began in 1982 and it was re-opened in 1987. Many visitors love crossing the bridge to take in views over the water. You must pay a small toll, but it's worth it to snap a few photos from this spot. You can stop at a nearby park on the St. Petersburg side of the bridge to rest, swim, or have a picnic. • It's one of the most amazing man-made structures I've ever had the privilege of experiencing. They don't call it the Sunshine Skyway Bridge for nothing. As you start to climb in elevation, it's like driving straight up into the sky headed towards the sun. It's kind of like being on a roller coaster where you're climbing, climbing and you can't see the other side. You are able to see in all directions the beauty of Florida without the nuisance of the city obstructing your views. I love driving across this bridge. An affordable and beautiful sight. Quite the experience. I'll never grow tired of crossing this bridge!
  • Why would anyone rate a bridge? If you are sightseeing, move to the right lane please. Use your cruise control devise and we all will get along. Always some kind of work going on and traffic doesn't know how to deal with it. If you are going to jump, jump at night so you don't screw up the daily traffic flow. If you are driving a less than reliable vehicle, don't go over the bridge. The view is wonderful and sometimes windy so keep both hands on the wheel. Yes there are dolphins swimming along the bridge and you can see them, but keep your eyes on the road please. Pelicans use the side wind draft and glide alongside the road and sometimes they poop and it gets all over your windshield. It might be foggy so slow down and use your lights. There are many activities going on alongside the road so keep your eyes on the road and let your passengers enjoy the view. If you have to pee there are restrooms on both sides of the bridge.
  • Visited in night. The lighting was good. But we couldn't stop the car to get down and see the scenery.
  • The worst place in the world to fish like a normal angler. Now if you're a sadist and want to be subjected to RUDE AND OBNOXIOUS morons with 20 foot pool nets running past you constantly while blowing their disgusting cigarette and pot smoke in your face while being tortured with their crappy "music" and listening to them CHING CHONG CHANG loudly on their phones, well...this is the place for you! Fishing is supposed to be recreational! It's supposed to be fun and relaxing! These idiots are obviously doing this as a business and I don't understand how this is allowed. Why aren't there regulations for these dimwits that come here only to net crabs?
  • Sunshine Skyway Bridge If you are a fan of architecture and engineering you will find the Skyway to be an interesting visit. The lines are remarkably clean. The bridge sits at the mouth of Tampa Bay and is designed to handle very difficult tides, currents, weather. A downside is that despite its size it is actually too low to allow the current crop.
