St. Marks Lighthouse, Tallahassee

#2 of 10 in Historic Sites in Tallahassee
The St. Marks Light is the second-oldest light station in Florida. It is located on the east side of the mouth of the St. Marks River, on Apalachee Bay.Historic backgroundIn the 1820s, the town of St. Marks, Florida was considered an important port of entry. The town served as a port for the prosperous planting region of Middle Florida and some counties of South Georgia. Growers hauled their agricultural products down to the port town in wagons by way of an early road which connected the then territorial capital of Tallahassee to the town of St. Marks. Later, this road would be widened and improved upon by the Tallahassee Railroad Company and would become the state's first railroad.Once the agricultural products reached the new port town, they were loaded aboard boats for shipment to New Orleans and/or St. Augustine. There were, however, problems in navigating both the Apalachee Bay and the St. Marks River. In many places both bay and river were shallow, and it was not too uncommon for boats to run aground and/or get mired in the muddy shallows.

  • Great place to visit if you like trails and wildlife. This is as raw as it gets. Very well protected and managed. There are so many trails you can pick from. Visit the guest center at the entrance and decide what trail to take. Make sure to have a map and decide where you will park your car. Some trails don’t even start few miles towards the lighthouse.
  • A great place - a hidden gem for those seeking nature shots, bird watchers, and people who seek peace and quiet. Too many trails to list - you can a few hours or a few LONGS days and still not see the whole refuge. Migratory birds make this a stop (somehow they know) and that adds to the richness of the bird species you will encounter
  • An absolutely beautiful lighthouse, but currently undergoing renovations. Even with us only being able to view the outside of the building, there was plenty to see, and the park that it resides in has picture perfect views for miles. It was also great being able to see a gator in the wild!
  • Great place to visit! You can easily spend a whole day out here. Be sure to follow the beach trails in either direction from the lighthouse for the best experience. There is no food or drink out at the lighthouse, so plan accordingly.
  • This is one of the first places we visited upon moving to Tallahassee. They have a cute gift shop and you can see the water from where the light house is. Last time we were there, you can’t go up into the light house on your own, but I do believe they open it at special times and allow patrons to visit.
