Unique wine & culinary destinations with two locations in the Traverse City area. Our iconic 160 acre estate on the Leelanau Peninsula features vineyards, an award winning winery and tasting room, a luxury Inn, a farm-to-table cafe, an equestrian facility, and hiking trails. Black Star Farms Old Mission is just a short drive from downtown Traverse City along the scenic rolling hills of M-37. It features vineyards, a state-of-the-art processing facility that includes our white wine production and distillation program, and a warm and friendly tasting room with a beautiful bar constructed of wine barrels. Our winery and distillery produce some of the most sought after and awarded Michigan wines and spirits. Our luxurious Inn is the perfect place to celebrate life's special moments or to host special events including weddings, corporate retreats, and holiday parties. Enjoy culinary offerings including cooking classes, elegant monthly Harvest Dinners, or casual fresh farmstead fare at the Hearth & Vine Cafe, all located on our Suttons Bay site.

To try our wines, visit one of our two Traverse City area tasting rooms, or visit our online wine store on our website.

  • This is a very pretty place and looks like a good place to stay but we were only there for a wine tasting. As far as the wine, we were not impressed. The service was just average too.

  • This is the email I sent to the company and the reply was thanks for the email: I wanted to express my disappointment with your tasting room. My family (6 of us) payed for your premium tasting and had a great time. The menu we were given had member prices and non member prices. At no the end of the menu were discount prices for cases so we ask Sam if we buy 2 Cases do we get the 20 percent off and he said yes. Being non members we assumed the was 20 percent off the non member prices. We decided to buy 2 cases. Nobody would help us get the 24 bottles so we searched around for the bottles (which was difficult because my parents are handicapped). When we got to the register we were told that we don’t get that discount. I went back to Sam And he said the menu was for members only (even though it has prices for both) and said we don’t get the 20 percent off even though he told us yes earlier. After spending $150 for the tasting I’m disappointed about the lack of help and poor communication. So instead of buying 24 bottles and we were talking about looking into the membership we bought nothing and will never be back. I never received an apology from the company. If this is how they do business they will learn that treating customers like this will hurt the bottom line. What they did not is one of the people with us is opening a 7 million dollar wine bar in Detroit and was considering them for an exclusive spot.
  • We were there 2 weeks ago and it was awesome! Tova assisted us with our tastings and she was great! Very knowledgeable and an assist to the Black Star Winery! Thank you for a most enjoyable experience! We visited 5 wineries that day and Black Star was the best!
  • I am a wine club member here because they have so many great wines. I have already dealt with friendly staff members that answer any questions I have. They have wonderful white wines and the pear wine is amazing!
  • We stopped here for a tasting and the wine was great. We absolutely would have purchased a bottle or two, but the employee (not revealing her name) was so rude that we decided to take out business elsewhere. Feel free to tell us how rude the other drunk people on their wine tour have been acting, but don’t treat us bad because you had a bad day. I would not come back.
  • Wonderful wines. Beautiful setting. Great prices.
