Trip Planner:   USA  /  Virginia  /  Surry  /  Bacon's Castle
Built in 1665, Bacon’s Castle is the oldest standing brick dwelling in the United States and was originally home to prosperous merchant and planter, Arthur Allen. In 1676, Allen was driven from his home by followers of Nathaniel Bacon, whose uprising later came to be known as Bacon’s Rebellion, for which Bacon’s Castle is now known.

Preservation Virginia acquired Bacon’s Castle in 1974 and after extensive research and restoration, opened the house to the public in 1983.

The site is open from March to December.

  • Great visit. Wonderful grounds. Love the architecture and it made me happy that with the renovations that they are getting done, they are taking every avenue to use materials that are as close to original as possible.
