  • We spent two hours here recently. We first spent about an hour hiking out into the prairie on a marked trail. We intended doing a circular hike, but had to interrupt our hike and return as the trail (...  read more »

  • I came here once when I was very young and returned again recently. It was great. The trails are nice, very scenic. The bus tour had some even nicer views than the hiking trails did. Our tour guide was a good balance of informative and casual. The barn was very cool, full of interesting old farm appliances. I would definitely suggest this. I think most people would be surprised at how much they would enjoy it.
  • Amazing place. Highly recommended! Sure, it's not mountains, but it's unique in its own. I can't compare it to a Mountain park because it's a completely different view. It's the most scenic place in Kansas or near Kansas City. You may be skeptical thinking it's just 'tall grass', but it's more than that. There are basically no trees anywhere so you can see for literally 10's of miles and all directions and the flint hills add to the scenery. Also, the sky is huge and surrounds you. It's quite a unique experience. You won't be disappointed! It's also a place of solitude. I've been on the trail 4 times and one time I never saw 1 other person for 2 hours of hiking in the huge open expanse of the preserve and the other times I only saw a few other people but they get lost in the distance. If you enjoyed this, be sure to check out the Sand Hills area of Nebraska, it has even larger hills and IMO is even more amazing. It's like the flint hills on steroids.
  • Was there for the Centennial event and it was fun. Good historical presentations. Did the scavenger hunt and walked one of the shorter trails. Bring sunblock, folks but through beating sun will be well worth the beautiful views.
  • Truly a captivating place. The old mansion is wonderful and the barn is astounding. The views are great. I would highly recommend following the Scenic Route out to where the Bison are, but be weary 3.2 miles one way is a long hike.
  • Located in the Flinthills of Kansas, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is beautiful. You can walk along the nature trails, tour the original house and barn on the property, and see a brief exhibit at the Visitor Center. The grass is beautiful and in its fullest during the summer, but great any time of year (except when the snow is covering it).
