Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, north of Strong City. The preserve protects a nationally significant example of the once vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Of the 400,000 square miles (1,000,000 km2) of tallgrass prairie that once covered the North American continent, less than 5% remains, primarily in the Flint Hills. Since 2009, the preserve has been home to the Tallgrass Prairie bison herd.

  • Wonderful preserve that provides insight into the early settlers in the Kansas Flint Hills. The visitor center is being remodeled during 2022 so is closed down but all of the Spring Hill Ranch...

  • This is a small visitor center but has a nice display explaining the prairie. We took a short walk thru the prairie to see the buffalo. It was interesting to learn about the prairie.

  • Lovely and peaceful place. This is a different type of beauty here in Kansas. The plane stretch as far as the eye can see. There are also Buffalo in the area as well. Depending on the time of day and season is very tranquil to walk on the path and the trails at the park has so meticulously maintained. Definitely worth several trips up here if you live in the area.
  • A very unique National Preserve that was the major stop back in the 1800's when cattle was being shipped from Colorado to Kansas. They stopped here to feed the cattle. There are many trails to take, and the house was very nice to walk through.
  • This was our first visit to this wonderful site. The extant buildings are well preserved and very interesting. We really got a sense of why people were attracted to Kansas. There is a sense too of warmth and well-being that is still present. The pictures are from two locations: the National Park Service site for the TGNP and the Schrumpf View Point south of the preserved area. Both are interesting and worth your time. A second or third visit is needed to hike the trails that begin at the preserved farm site. It was 100F the day we visited so plan accordingly. Approximately 12 miles north in Council Grove there is a brewery, River Bank Brewing. After a long, dusty time on the road it's just the thing.
  • Please put up signage for driving around the barn for handicap parking ip top! The visitor center is under repair and parking is being expanded. This necessitated parking at the far end and walking quite a jaunt for the people I was with. They did offer a golf cart after we got up near the house. Would have taken them up on it down at the lot. Otherwise, we enjoyed all the buildings and information and the Flint Hills are stunning! Definitely worth a visit.
  • Not far off US Hwy 50. The views were spectacular. I wish I would have had more time for hiking. I definitely plan to return.
