Mount Mansfield State Forest, Stowe

Categories: Mountains, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web
Reach the very top of Vermont with a climb up Mount Mansfield State Forest, the state's highest mountain. With a summit over 1,300 m (4,300 ft) above sea level, this peak is one of only three spots in Vermont where alpine tundra survives from as far back as the last Ice Age. Said to resemble a human profile, and most distinct when viewed from the east, the mountain offers visitors different views via several hiking trails. Some of the most popular trails start from a state park located on the western side of the mountain, where the terrain naturally provides a good shelter from adverse weather conditions. Check online for trail conditions and closings before you make the trip. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Stowe holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Mount Mansfield State Forest and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • In the summer and in the winter a highlight! Ascent on foot, by gondola or comfortable with accessible by car. Great views in all directions!

  • Very nice landscape, especially in autumn. The rise did it in the funicular (they call him gondola) like the descent.

  • Definitely worth the price of the toll. The views are amazing. The hike up the mountain was nice and not as challenging as some may think. There are many places to stop and enjoy the view. Even if you don't hike all the way to the top, it's still worth the effort.
  • Beautiful vistas from the peak. Nice trail with interesting rocks, you can see the way the rocks were formed. Loved the smell of the evergreens. Be prepared for any type of weather.
  • Great place to hike. You can start over from underhill state park which has restroom facilities and such to help get you sorted before your climb up.
  • Not sure how to review a "forest" but I will try. This is a great place. Hosts the Stowe ski resort. There is a bunch of hiking (up to the Chin or Notch). Note that the road through to Smugglers Notch (rt 108) is closed during the winter due to snow.
  • Nice relaxing place, great scenery/views, can be a bit crowded at times.
