Mount Mansfield State Forest, Stowe

#1 of 74 in Nature in Vermont
Reach the very top of Vermont with a climb up Mount Mansfield State Forest, the state's highest mountain. With a summit over 1,300 m (4,300 ft) above sea level, this peak is one of only three spots in Vermont where alpine tundra survives from as far back as the last Ice Age. Said to resemble a human profile, and most distinct when viewed from the east, the mountain offers visitors different views via several hiking trails. Some of the most popular trails start from a state park located on the western side of the mountain, where the terrain naturally provides a good shelter from adverse weather conditions. Check online for trail conditions and closings before you make the trip. Plan trip to Stowe with our itinerary maker to find out where to go and what to do.

  • Took the "Ride and Dine" up the mountain for lunch. Great food and wonderful views from the Gondola!  more »
  • The Mansfield lodge is too small for the number of people who use it on Fridays and weekends. There are too many intersections with fast skiers going straight down and slower skiers, or those going...  more »
  • Visited in late December and a lot of the runs were closed due to lack of snow. I could not tell if the snow making was being utilized to full capacity, but if it was they need more of it. Possibly...  more »

  • What an amazing hike. Highly recommend taking the laural trail first even though it's the most strenuous it's all worth it. Once you get to the top it's some of the best views in New England. The loop back down sunset ridge is breath taking and much easier
  • I loved my hike through and up Mount Mansfield. The paths are well laid out and maintained its a fairly gentle hike (sunset ridge) with only a few steep sections. Take your time and expect to spend around 5hours going up and down on this hike - much more rewarding than taking the gondola up!
  • We took the toll road up the mountain and then followed the 1.4 Mile hike along long trail North to visit the highest peak in Vermont. This trail leads to the "chin" of Mount Mansfield and is somewhat challenging. It took us about 1.5 hours each way with our 8 year old daughter. Be sure to bring an overcoat as it gets chilly at the top.
  • Trail head leaving right from the campground makes this spot ideal for hikers. We scored a group site during the week and had that whole area to ourselves. Would definitely recommend this spot to friends. Portable water available.
  • Beautiful scenery once you're at the top. Great chance to hike a mountain and several distances are available for your hiking preference. Cool with lush mountain vegetation. The mountain smells are awesome too!
