Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge
Categories: Art Museums, Museums
Home to the largest collection of this artist's paintings, the whitewashed house of the Norman Rockwell Museum sits among the hills. In addition to nearly 600 paintings, you'll find an archive with over 100,000 items and artifacts, plus fan mail. The museum building itself, situated among green countryside and rolling hills, is suggestive of the ideals that Rockwell espoused in his work. Having grown up with Saturday Evening Post and Look magazine covers, I was TOTALLY blown away by 320 of them on the walls of this fantastic museum. Listening to the Docent give us a brush-by-brush biography of a dozen or more of Rockwell's most famous paintings opened an entirely new chapter in the life of this incredible American Icon. Who knew he painted John Wayne AND Frank Sinatra???
Real americana on canvas. Rockwell got it right. I am most impressed with facilities and staff. A great way to spend the day, if not two.
We really enjoyed our visit here. The staff gives a 20 minute talk, then will answer all your questions. His original studio is in the building next door, very interesting. Wonderful art!
Worth a visit at least once a year for the new illustrator exhibits, a walk around the grounds, and an ever-growing appreciation of Norman Rockwell. Bonus points if you meet a local in the Berkshires who was a model, then find their print!
This is a great museum. The atmosphere as you go room to room discovering his life and work was amazing. I'm a first time visiter. And I will come again one day.
