Maryland’s distilling roots run deep. Prior to Prohibition, Maryland proudly produced what was widely regarded to be the nation’s finest whiskey, a distinct style called Maryland Rye. During the 13 years of Prohibition, Maryland’s enterprising farmers continued to turn their plentiful harvests into high-proof “swamp lightning” in stills hidden among the coves, inlets, and marshes of the Chesapeake. Oystermen and crabbers smuggled the “good stuff” up and down the Bay, evading Federal Revenue agents and the Coast Guard, finding safe haven among the close-lipped communities that lined the tidewater.

But rarely did they face harassment from local authorities. Maryland, the only state never to enact a Prohibition enforcement law, was known as the “wettest state” during the 13 years of national Prohibition. It was during this time that Maryland figures such as Governor Albert Richie and author and Baltimore Sunpapers columnist H.L. Mencken rose to national fame for their vehement opposition to what they viewed as an egregious overreach of Federal authority, and rumrunners like Pete “King James” Kelly rose to infamy.

At Blackwater Distilling, Maryland’s first fully-licensed beverage alcohol distillery since 1972, we celebrate this brash, enterprising, and fiercely independent spirit, as well as the farmers, bootleggers, and rumrunners who kept the “good stuff” flowing while the rest of the nation ran dry. Like the enterprising farmers and watermen of the 1920s and 1930s, it is our mission to produce the highest quality spirits from quality, local ingredients, preserving one of Maryland’s finest traditions.

  • There was something for everyone in our family at Blackwater Distilling. Guests and employees were super friendly. It was a nice laid back atmosphere. Drink choices were fun as well as the merch section.
  • Manny gave an informative and enthusiastic tour of the small distillery (Maryland's oldest, established in 2008). We saw their single copper still where they make vodka, rum and whisky with top quality ingredients. The vodka was extremely smooth and the whiskies aged in wine, sherry and port casks were delightful. But our favorites are their rums from cane sugar aged in wine and bourbon barrels. Tasty! The current facility is at one end of a simple industrial building. They are moving in a coupe of months to a new place where they will have their distillery and dedicated tasting room and outdoor area. We're looking forward to seeing the new place.
  • We had a great visit to this little distillery. It's in a nondescript location but the experience was enjoyable. They have a nice selection of products and the host had a great personality. Schedule a visit, you won't be disappointed.
  • The grand opening and Chesapeake Bay Education Center fundraiser was a blast! Great drinks, food, music. Lots of fun with a great purpose! Clarified Rum Punch is one amazing cocktail. See picture.
  • Local distillery with several variations of craft whiskeys, rums and vodkas. Finishing Barrel Series of whiskeys are aged in port and sherry casks. Flavored vodkas and runs, even a port barrel aged vodka. Also serves local craft microbrew beers. Food delivery is available. Bottles are available for purchase on site or in local liquor stores.
