Chihuly Collection, St. Petersburg

(4.3/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
Chihuly Collection houses the only permanent collection of artist Dale Chihuly, whose glass sculptures have graced the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre. Highlights include the Ruby Red Icicle Chandelier, commissioned specifically for the museum, which hangs from the ceiling. With spikes poking out at all angles, the chandelier resembles a sea anemone. For an in-depth look at Chihuly’s work, take a tour led by one of the museum’s knowledgeable docents. You can buy a combination ticket, which will allow you to finish the experience by stopping by the Glass Studio & Hot Shop to watch glassblowers create new works. Chihuly Collection is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, St. Petersburg Edition.

  • This is an amazing place and well worth a visit. The glass art is beautiful, unique and awesome all at once. Be sure to visit the hot spot across the street to see real artists blow glass before your eyes.
  • On the positive side, the glass art is exquisitely crafted and quite interesting to view up close. The museum has a relatively nice layout and feels modern. Personally as someone in my 30s, I didn't enjoy the aesthetic of the Chihuly glass work. The art feels flamboyant, and showy and just didn't interest me aesthetically. This is a purely subjective opinion however. The older crowd around me seemed to marvel at the pieces. My second critique is that the price of admission at $20/ adult is far too much for the small size of the museum space. It took us about 20 minutes to view everything, including browsing the gift shop. There was also a video that we didn't see. The price of admission also includes a live glass demo at a glass studio about a block away. This was far more interesting to me to watch, since it was quite mesmerizing seeing a large glass vase come to life starting from raw, molten glass. Overall, if you're in St.Pete for a short time the Salvador Dali museum is a far better value for your time and cost of admission.
  • The very definition of quality over quantity. The museum consists of only a handful of pieces/displays, but they are carefully chosen to be readily appreciated from multiple angles. Doesn't hurt that a free demonstration at the glassblowing studio across the street is included with each ticket.
  • I was surprised how easily I recognized the art work, but didn't know the name of the artist. But I was advised to check this collection out - and I had just enough time during a break to quickly walk through this exhibit. The art is displayed beautifully. It feels as if you are gliding through a mystical world of light, ambiance, and magic. There are rooms where you sense you are swimming in a sea of color. It is a small exhibit. I was able to completely explore the entire collection in about 30 minutes - although I was rushing myself due to other obligations. I wasn't able to attend the glass blowing demonstration. So if you are in St. Petersburg - make time to spend an hour or two at this museum and glass blowing demonstration.
  • Great display. If you are on the fence about liking what you've seen of his work you won't be after you see these displays. He's done a fantastic job of arranging them so that you can really appreciate them and has made them so accessible. Make sure you're steady on your feet!
