Where to stay in St. Helena

Because St. Helena is nestled in upscale wine country, most people who visit have no intention of roughing it. As such, the city sports a number of luxurious hotels. Several boast restaurants, hot tubs, and swimming pools; however, keep in mind that those with extensive grounds tend to be farther away from the main street. Budget-conscious travelers can find some more basic motels (looking farther out of town is a good way to save a few dollars). However, those staying on the outskirts should be aware that parking--particularly during high season--can be challenging in the city.

  • Good wine, pleasant experience. Good stories about the family history. No tour or anything of the like, but still very personal and worth the trip up the mountain.  more »

  • Such a beautiful vineyard and delicious wines. The tasting was fun and the employee helping us was knowledgeable of all the wines. Don't miss this hidden gem.
  • Amazing. Literally amazing. And I mean literally-literally, not figuratively-literally. The place is gorgeous, the wines distinct (you can actually tell the difference between wines, and thus I'm sure you'll find something[s] you like no matter what your palette or preference), and the people genuine and warm. The owner even came out and sat with us, conversing on everything from silly I-know-nothing-about-wine questions to the history of Napa to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.
  • Small winery with intimate tastings. There are other places on Spring Mountain that also have good wine (Pride, Keenan, Smith Madrone, etc.), but none of them consistently have the feeling of going to a friend's home the way Schweiger does. We never feel rushed, and we never feel like we're competing with other guests for time to talk with the host. The wine is similarly unrushed. Since they paid off the land decades ago and don't have pressure to pay the bills, they have the ability to age the wine (in barrels, then in bottle) for years longer than the surrounding wineries. While Pride is currently releasing their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Schweiger is only releasing their 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon!
  • Great wine and an amazing view from the tasting room. Highly recommended.
  • Small and family Owned. Really enjoyed our tasting with amazing views!
