Where to stay in St. Helena

Because St. Helena is nestled in upscale wine country, most people who visit have no intention of roughing it. As such, the city sports a number of luxurious hotels. Several boast restaurants, hot tubs, and swimming pools; however, keep in mind that those with extensive grounds tend to be farther away from the main street. Budget-conscious travelers can find some more basic motels (looking farther out of town is a good way to save a few dollars). However, those staying on the outskirts should be aware that parking--particularly during high season--can be challenging in the city.

  • Bad Customer service by Supervisor on duty. I had Tasting reservations for 4 ; called and changed it to 2 people and confirmed the Tasting. I am a big fan of Rombauer - my 6 visit in 15 years. On this...  more »
  • Oh how I love Rombauer, let me count the ways! I've loved this wine for years, and this visit was on my short list of MUST DOS/SEES. We arrived for our cave tour and were made to feel like we were the...  more »
  • Wow what a great view from the deck enjoying a glass of wine. Great gardens. We got to try all the wines that are not distribute in the wine market. Great Zinfandel and Chardonnay.  more »

  • We have been club members here for at least 8 years. We love this winery for the wines and the views. Great Zinfandel and Chardonnay;
  • What a change from the family winery I discovered years ago. The last visit i was told the road was closed and there was a detour. Reservations are now required to taste for all members. The tasting menu is set, no options or substitutions. I wanted to taste a wine i wanted to purchase and was told no. If i wanted to taste it, go and buy it. When i called about traffic, I was told if i was 15 minutes late, i would be considered a no show. This was at 12 noon and our first stop. I wanted to purchase with 2 credit cards and that was a problem. When we arrived up top, the parking lot was almost empty and they were not busy. It has become very corporate and rigid it seems. I miss the rombauer i discovered years ago. Wines are good, but the experience was a disappointment.
  • The scenery and picnic tables nestled amongst the winery hillside is a beautiful place for a picnic. If you're bringing a picnic, get there early before lunch to snag a spot, as they go quickly. The wine is divine!!! The tasting experience is inside and, while full of information, feels a little rushed and not that relaxing of a venue.
  • Known for their Chardonnay, wine tasting is $25, with the view and wine well worth it. They also have a picnic permit and you can enjoy lunch with a view after tasting.
  • Every taste topped the last, a seemingly impossible feat! Truly beautiful property, and our host, Stephanie was GREAT!!!
