Brigham Young Winter Home Historical Site, St. George

4.5
The Brigham Young Winter Home and Office is a historic residence and museum located in St. George, Utah. Brigham Young was the foremost Mormon pioneer and led the church to the Utah Territory. As Young grew older, his arthritis precluded him from spending winters in the Salt Lake City region, so his followers built him a winter home in St. George in the arid Dixie region of Utah. Young seasonally occupied the home and office from 1873 to 1876. The building was eventually deeded to the Utah State Parks and Recreation department and is now open as a museum.HistoryBrigham Young was a tradesman from Whitingham, Vermont who converted to Mormonism in 1830. He joined President of the Church Joseph Smith's Church of Christ in 1832 and moved to their headquarters in Kirtland, Ohio. After the church relocated to Nauvoo, Illinois, Smith named Young to the first Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and named him president of the group in 1839. In 1844, the residents of Nauvoo were split over the issue of plural marriage, leading to the arrest of Smith. A mob of men assassinated Smith while he was in jail, resulting in the succession crisis.

  • Its a fun place to visit to see some history of the LDS church. It is a large house and yard. It is free, and in the cute historic downtown area, so make sure to walk the few block around it.  more »
  • The BY Houme is a living museum. it is faith-based, but is welcome to all. Come and see a fine, free example of preantenbellum architecture in the west.  more »

  • You can learn some really interesting history when visiting. My father and I visited, and although we are not of this religion it was worth the effort of visiting. In the house I found that the wooden fireplaces painted to look like marble we're remarkable. Also, the plates that contained a reservoir for hot water to keep the food warm as well as the beds having a mobile rod at the footboard, around which one could wind the bed cover we're both brilliant! The greenery, gardens and trees were also lovely.
  • Very detailed tours given by older LDS missionary couples. A nice historic stop in St. George that doesn't cost a cent!
  • Great historical site. A lot of information about the early settlements in St. George. Plus you get to know why the town is called St. George!
  • It's always fun to visit LDS Church historical sites. On the free tour my family learned about raising cotton, about Brigham Young, the history of St. George and how people lived in the 1850's.
  • A welcomed mix of stretching legs after a long drive and a history lesson. Learned a lot about settling Utah and the St. George area. The home and grounds are absolutely lovely and it is ran by volunteers, which is neat.
