Mission of Nombre de Dios, St. Augustine

4.7
#7 of 17 in Historic Sites in St. Augustine
The history of Mission of Nombre de Dios dates back to Europe's early settlers on what's now U.S. soil. Florida's first Spanish settlers founded the mission in the second half of the 16th century as the religious center and a way to spread the Christian faith among the local Native American tribes. The land, close to the spot where Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed in 1565--marked by a 62 m (204 ft) tall cross--now hosts several churches and shrines. You can enjoy the serene atmosphere, visit holy sites, the mission's museum, monuments, and historic landmarks. Donations are accepted. You might want to bring insect repellent to fight off the mosquitoes. • Save at least an hour to do this mission and the little park where it's located. It's beautiful and peaceful. I go at least every other time I get to visit St. Augustine- which is a lot!  more »

  • Free to look around everything, and major trolley tours stop here, so it's worth it to stop by for a bit and explore! The grounds are gorgeous, and the church is a lovely place for a moment of quiet. Be sure to check out the museum (also free), it has some great exhibits, and the staff there is super friendly and knowledgeable. They're willing to explain anything on display, including some very interesting stories. For an interesting piece of history, Menendez's outer coffin is on display here as well.
  • Very quiet and peaceful place to reflect. A must see on my list for visitors.
  • Beautiful gardens along the river. Place is easy to find, just look for the largest cross in the country. I enjoyed taking photos around the property.
  • Beautiful, peaceful place. Love walking through here.
  • Wonderful chapel with all facilities in area,
