Fort Matanzas National Monument, St. Augustine

To touch the humid walls more than two and a half centuries old of Fort Matanzas National Monument, hop on a small ferry and cross the river to this Spanish outpost fort. It's in the midst of a salt marsh and rich with wildlife. See the exact room where soldiers were sleeping, eating, and getting dressed before their duties. Up on the rooftop, you can check out the cannons that were used to guard the area. Pick up free tickets at the visitor center on the mainland. The area is suitable for picnicking. • Free, National Park visit, nice boat ride to island. If there at end of day, young children assist in taking down flags and securing fort. Nice history eduction of early times and area.  more »
  • The younger kids should enjoy the short ferry ride across the river. The stay is not too long where everyone gets hot and tired. A short, free, historical, mini-excursion that I would recommend.  more »
  • Enjoyed this sidetrip. The rangers were very informative and the fort was interesting. You are on the site 30 minutes which is the perfect amount of time. AND ITS FREE.  more »

  • Fort Matanzas was a very enjoyable and informative side trip on our trip up the Atlantic Coast of Florida. From the welcoming area, we took a boat across the channel to a Colonial fort set up by the Spaniards to protect St. Augustine. We enjoyed a re-enactment of musket firing by actors in period dress and were able to tour the fort and surrounding area, self-guided.
  • Free boat ride! This smaller but strategically important fort sits near confluence of a few small river branches so you'll often see dolphins feeding nearby. Bring hat or sunscreen. Plenty of parking & beautiful live oaks shade a picnic area. Wooden walking trail. Large, clean restrooms. Small gift shop with nature guides.
  • Matanzas is the lesser visited Spanish fort in St. Augustine. You have to arrive early enough to get a free ticket for the boat ride over to actually see the fort. It's actually more of a fortified sentry post to guard the back door of the city, Matanzas inlet. My kids actually like it better than the Castillo because of the boat ride. Well worth the short drive south from St. Augustine.
  • A wonderful bit of history that a lot of people Miss because it's not as prominent as other forts in the area. If you drive south on A1A you can find it, and to get to the main Fort you get a little boat ride that lasts a lot longer if you don't go during a thunderstorm like we did. That said it's well worth the little bit of History that's there and it's a lot of fun.
  • Very pretty place. They strive to keep it safe for the visitors and to keep it in the same shape it was back when it was first made. Very pretty. Good picture taking place. Good for kids. Many rooms.to explore and visit. Very, very cool. Would definitely recommend for anyone with children or to anyone who loves history. They have signs that explain what everything is. Lovely place with friendly staff and park rangers. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING
