Fort Matanzas National Monument, St. Augustine

4.6
#3 of 17 in Historic Sites in St. Augustine
To touch the humid walls more than two and a half centuries old of Fort Matanzas National Monument, hop on a small ferry and cross the river to this Spanish outpost fort. It's in the midst of a salt marsh and rich with wildlife. See the exact room where soldiers were sleeping, eating, and getting dressed before their duties. Up on the rooftop, you can check out the cannons that were used to guard the area. Pick up free tickets at the visitor center on the mainland. The area is suitable for picnicking. This fort was built by the Spanish when they controlled the area, and it was manned by detachments from St. Augustine. It is possible to visit the fort. You park at the Park office and the Park service has a boat that takes you there. Unfortunately the boat was in need of repair the day I visited. It might be useful to call ahead. I didn't actually have a chance to visit the fort but I like the idea of the boat ride and I have to have empathy for the poor souls posted to guard duty at the fort. Makes you think. Maybe I'll decide a five is too good a score once I get there.

It's a small Fort but big on the history surrounding it. The Park services provide a ferry to get to it Volunteers and Rangers are well informed in explaining the history and any questions you might have. Free parking amid the old oaks with restrooms and a few vending machines. There's also park offices there to get information on the ferry times. After visiting the fort before heading back to St Augustine drive south over the bridge for a few miles for the ocean views.

When I visited the boat that take you to the fort was not in operation due to the last hurricane so I couldn't get up close to the fort itself. The rangers and volunteers working here are friendly and knowledgeable. There are some great views of the Matanzas River. The nature trail is an easy walk on a boardwalk and provide some great views as well. When the boats are running the admission and boat are free.

Went here last trip. Friendly staff and easy walking tour. Great views from the roof. Nice gift store and informative roll players on the grounds. Stop and talk with a park ranger they are very knowledgeable. Good time with children, open spaces for then and activities. Right across from main walking area of town.

Great view from the shore but the ferries were still not operating from the last hurricane in October which was ridiculous but it may be in part due to the budget cuts to the National Park Service. Regardless, the ranger at the gift shop was friendly and the store had a lot of info about the fort and St Augustine. Hopefully the ferry service starts up again.
