Government Building Historic Site
Old State Capitol provides a look the architecture and design of Illinois' most important state building from 1839 to 1876, a period during which Abraham Lincoln was a frequent visitor. It was here that Lincoln gave his famous "House Divided" speech, declared his candidacy for Senate, and laid in state before his funeral. Watch a video detailing the restored Greek Revival building’s history before embarking on an interpreter-led tour of government offices, libraries, the Supreme courtroom, and legislative chambers. Take a stroll around the gardens surrounding the building and see the nearby fountain. Tours are free. • Another free self guided tour. We we went and looked things over. There is an elevator. It is set up like they are still in session.  more »
  • Good tour gave insight into Illinois history before the more modern era. Maybe unsurprising focus on Lincoln. Worth a visit and close to other attractions  more »
  • Our tour guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. We learned a lot about President Lincoln we didn't know before, a strong beginning of our tour of Lincoln country.  more »

  • Very old building with historical significance. Very well preserved artifacts from the past. Education exhibits are a nice touch. Refreshing A/C is definitely a plus when a retreat from a scorching heat is necessary when visiting downtown Springfield.
  • A great historical building two walk around in. Everything is Captain interacional forum. It is a great experience to walk from room to room and see everything it's in its original shape
  • We have visited the Old State Capitol multiple times as local residents and we love it. Our most recent visit was this holiday season during the downtown holiday walk. The REAL Santa and Mrs. Claus were there visiting with the children and it was a hit with the entire family. They were wonderful and took the time to visit with each child. My 6-year old reported it was "a dream come true"! The staff was as welcoming as always and even had a selection of crafts for the kids. Love this place! We were sorry to miss the Civil War era Santa due to an ice storm. I highly recommend a visit to the Old State Capitol. Their tours are very interesting and if you're lucky to catch a special, on-site event, you're sure to be in for a real treat!
  • Excellent tour. Very informative. Great history comes alive.
