Whether you’re a devoted birdwatcher or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is a great stop for your itinerary. Nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and Laguna Madre, South Padre Island’s wetlands are home to more than 300 species, including the endangered brown pelican, piping plover and peregrine falcon. Watch the documentary screened in the auditorium to learn about the island’s birds and other wildlife. Then, head to the boardwalk to spy a variety of birds. The five blinds and five story-tower are great spots for watching. The island’s rich wildlife also includes a variety of plants and animals, such as dolphins and alligators. Bring sunscreen if you’re visiting on a hot day, as most of the boardwalk doesn't offer cover. • They conduct weekly guided tours, but you can go by yourself too. Inexpensive. Bring binoculars and a wide-brimmed hat.  more »
  • Very nice nature center, the woman at the front desk was welcoming and helpful, pointing out where we were likely to see alligators (which we did, much to the delight of my 8-year old.  more »

  • Fun place with beautiful landscapes. Went in September and didn't see too many variety of birds. Beware the annoying pigeons which literally flocked around us the ENTIRE TIME and with their sh#t and nastiness nearly ruined the serenity of the boardwalk. Its super hot and water fountains and shade are in short supply. Recommend umbrellas and cool water to stay safe.
  • I love coming here for not only the amazing views of the bay and the scenic walk of the never ending deck; but the view from the "lighthouse" is breathtaking. I love seeing all the different birds and learning about them and their habitats. These people have worked hard to give these birds a sanctuary. Decent admission price and money well spent. Bring the entire family and enjoy yourselves!
  • It was a lot more fun than i thought. Didnt see the allagator but still worth it.. fed birds fishes and wathed the movie gelt like a kid again
  • Great nature walk. We saw the alligator at the very end underneath the boardwalk. Also lots of rare birds. Our little daughter dropped her sandal in the water and one of the staff came and got it out with a long pole. Enjoyed it, will go back.
  • We saw a few of the birds on the list that we should see, did not find the alligator, and had a ton of pigeons swarming us. Saw many fish, crabs and ducks. Nature does its own thing so I don't find that this was bad. We went middle of the day and likely would have seen more earlier before the heat. Overall worth the $6 entry and a nice walk.
