Sea Turtle, Inc., South Padre Island

(4.7/5 based on 1,800+ reviews on the web)
Since 1977, Sea Turtle, Inc. has grown from a concerned conservation group to include a hospital and rehabilitation center. Numerous sea turtles get hurt by predators or fishermen, and their eggs get lost due to urbanization. That threatens the balance of the ecosystem and leads to large reductions of sea life. At the center, you can hear about sea turtles and about the organization's efforts to protect all marine turtle species. You'll see tanks with different kinds of turtles--some injured and some nearly cured--and learn about the ways they are rehabilitated before being returned to the wild. Donations are welcome. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, South Padre Island holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Sea Turtle, Inc. and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Super nice place, very educational. The greatest staff are there working very hard to answer all question. It was a lot of fun feeding some of the turtles.
  • This is a sea turtle rescue. If you want to see sea turtles up close, this is a great place to do it and stay dry in the process. They had several turtles in at the time due to a flash freeze a few we...  more »

  • I visit South Padre often and have been to Sea Turles Inc a few times over the years. I have always had good experiences until the last time I visited. The staff was very unfriendly and seemed very annoyed when my kids asked them questions trying to learn about turtles. We waited a long time for some sort of presentation but the 2 girls that worked there just stood by the gift shop talking to each other. My 6 year old and her friends went up to them and tried to tell them about a sea turtle project at school and was genuinely excited to learn about turtles to go back and teach their class. Instead the Sea Turtle Inc employee just rolled her eyes and said "yeah that's nice" and walked away. My kids (and me) grew quickly frustrated and unstimulated and just left without learning anything. We then went to the Birding & Nature Center where the employees were definitely more enthusiastic and hands on and we had a great time. I am not sure why these Turtle employees had bad attitudes that day but we went specifically to learn about turtles so my kids could go back to school with a deeper appreciation and share what they learned. Turned out to be a waste of time. After this last visit I just hope the sea turtles aren't neglected and are loved.
  • Kids love it...Lots sea turtle. They saving these creatures. Some are huge sizes. Again kids love it...Very unique place 4 kids...And, adults love it 2\^^/
  • Wonderful place! Loved seeing all the turtles. Show up at around 3 to see Gerry eat lettuce.
  • This place is truly amazing! I am so glad they are expanding, because it is much needed. But, my kids loved every second and came home with stories to tell! Thanks to all the hard workers who take care of these rescue turtles! There is no charge to come see them, but donations are needed. We made a $50 gift shop purchase to help out.
  • We love turtles, and Sea Turtle Inc.! Sea turtle Inc. Is a great resource for the area beaches. They help protect egg nests, and rehabilitate injured wild turtles with hopes to release as many as possible back into the wild. There are turtles in holding tanks on view to the public while healing. Many informative exhibits on different species of sea turtles including a very cool turtle skeleton. Merchandise is available. There is no admission charge, but please leave a donation. We go with every island visit.
