Sea Turtle, Inc., South Padre Island

4.7
#1 of 107 in Wildlife in Texas
Since 1977, Sea Turtle, Inc. has grown from a concerned conservation group to include a hospital and rehabilitation center. Numerous sea turtles get hurt by predators or fishermen, and their eggs get lost due to urbanization. That threatens the balance of the ecosystem and leads to large reductions of sea life. At the center, you can hear about sea turtles and about the organization's efforts to protect all marine turtle species. You'll see tanks with different kinds of turtles--some injured and some nearly cured--and learn about the ways they are rehabilitated before being returned to the wild. Donations are welcome. • This is a small non-profit organization that rescues turtles which happens to let people visit. And this is good! You aren't going to get a velvet rope museum tour because everyone is working on rehabilitating turtles, and you get to see that first hand. There's a wealth of knowledge to be had from just talking with the staff. This place is worth stopping by if you're on the island. It's not expensive and mostly donation driven.
  • Excellent little non-profit organization rehabilitating sea turtles. They have several turtles in pools that they are either rehabbing or that they can't release because they are too impaired to survive in the wild, but they are being well cared for and serve to educate the public. You can even sponsor a turtle egg nest and I think it's an excellent idea. Sea Turtle Inc is definitely helping the sea turtle population and hopefully our children will see these magnificent creatures for generations to come.
  • This was the highlight of our vacation! I happened across this on a website and we decided to give it a shot. Our 3yr old had a BLAST and my husband and I now feel like turtle experts, lol. They had TONS of info and you can tell this is really their passion! Admission is by donation - recommended $4 per adult, $2 per child. They are opening a new facility this year and I think admission pricing will go up but based on the experience we had at the current center it would have been worth much more than the suggested donation! We saw so many turtles and were even able to watch them feed them and they pulled one female out for a quick biopsy. Too fun!
  • This was a great chance to see the sea turtles up close. Love what they do for them and the fact that each turtle has a story. The presentation was educational. Definitely worth the stop!! You can stay as long as you like or rush through it all in about 15-20 minutes.
  • I took my kids here and they loved it. They are a great organization helping sea turtles. There employees are very knowledgeable and dedicated to what they're doing. They are free to go see them and they only take donations, so I recommend being a good person and helping out by giving a donation anything helps.

Where to stay in South Padre Island

As with most tropical destinations, room rates in South Padre Island increase the closer you get to the beachfront, especially if you arrive at the height of tourist season. If you’ve built in a big budget for accommodations, stay at one of the town's high-rise luxury hotels or private seaside cottages. To stay near the water without spending too much, avoid the expensive spring break season. Consider one of the island's inns or developed campgrounds with easy beach access.
