Sonoma Plaza, Sonoma

4.6
#4 of 25 in Parks in Sonoma County
At the heart of Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Plaza offers historical sightseeing, shopping, dining, and arts. See the early 20th-century city hall that's still in use and the Bear Flag monument that marks the spot of an 1846 Mexican-American War revolt. Browse the shops for clothing, bags, jewelry, and books. Because of its proximity to wine country, you can choose from among an array of wine cellars and tasting rooms and indulge in local and imported brands. You'll find plenty of galleries here that feature historical and contemporary pieces from around the world, and the area offers numerous spots for photography. Start your visit at the visitors' bureau on the east side of the plaza. Use our Sonoma trip itinerary builder website to add Sonoma Plaza and other attractions to your Sonoma vacation plans.

  • Nice shops and tasting rooms. Family run stores that are more accessible than higher end store found in Healdsburg. Nice Irish bar and hotels on the square. An original mission on the square.  more »
  • Just a neat little step off of the square. Nicely tucked away, this little avenue provides you access to some boutique shops and great tasting rooms. Have fun exploring.  more »
  • We went to Sonoma Plaza. The area was festive with the lights in the park area. We went for a festive holiday dinner at the Swiss Hotel Restaurant and Bar. There are a variety of wine tasting rooms, b...  more »

  • If you are a local you know how fun this square is. Tuesday night Farmers Market is a blast, more like a festival than a farmers market. So many great businesses here I cannot name them all. Check out Terra Firma Art Gallery, it is always worth taking a stroll thru the gallery to check out the ever changing art collection. Taste some cheese at the Sonoma Cheese Factory, grab a sandwich here and picnic across the street in the park. There is a great little playground in the park that seem to be perennially in the shade, which, is great on a hot summer day. There is a historic adobe mission here and barracks too.
  • Cute shops, great restaurants, historical sites, and hiking trails, as well as wineries, are all within easy access from the charming downtown square. Sonoma is fantastic and time of the year.
  • My town Rocks. Sonoma Strong....always Thanks to all of those that helped others in their time of despair and need. We will rebuild, and be better than ever. Blessed Be JD
  • Great place for lunch. Town square has lots of picnic tables. Get a bottle of wine and some bread and cheese and enjoy!
  • After a morning of wine tasting with kids we usually come here for a picnic and some playground time. There are lots of trees for shade, and it doesn't hurt that there are multiple ice cream shops surrounding the plaza.

Where to stay in Sonoma

Prices for accommodations in Sonoma are often high. The hotels on or near the town square offer an unbeatable location for experiencing the city's many cultural delights, but you'll pay extra for the convenience. Properties located farther out are more economical and quiet, and provide easy access to Sonoma's stunning countryside. If you are planning a longer holiday, consider booking a vacation rental that feels like a home away from home.
