Sonoma Plaza, Sonoma

#1 of 8 in Sightseeing in Sonoma
Landmark Nature / Park
At the heart of Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Plaza offers historical sightseeing, shopping, dining, and arts. See the early 20th-century city hall that's still in use and the Bear Flag monument that marks the spot of an 1846 Mexican-American War revolt. Browse the shops for clothing, bags, jewelry, and books. Because of its proximity to wine country, you can choose from among an array of wine cellars and tasting rooms and indulge in local and imported brands. You'll find plenty of galleries here that feature historical and contemporary pieces from around the world, and the area offers numerous spots for photography. Start your visit at the visitors' bureau on the east side of the plaza. Add Sonoma Plaza to your Sonoma travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Sonoma vacation route planner.

Where to stay in Sonoma

Prices for accommodations in Sonoma are often high. The hotels on or near the town square offer an unbeatable location for experiencing the city's many cultural delights, but you'll pay extra for the convenience. Properties located farther out are more economical and quiet, and provide easy access to Sonoma's stunning countryside. If you are planning a longer holiday, consider booking a vacation rental that feels like a home away from home.

  • Great plaza to grab lunch or coffee and enjoy nature. Beautiful water fountain and nice landscaping. Shops are around the entire square.  more »

  • One of the best Farmer's Market events I've been to. Seems to be more of a community gathering, that happens to have vendors but very fun. City party is one not to miss.
  • There are a ton of little shops and restaurants on the Square and also right off the square. It's hard to decide where to eat because of the great selection. If you get take out you can get your lunch and use one of the picnic tables in the square or decide to dine in and grab a table in the restaurant or maybe opt to sit outside and people watch. The only downside is parking! It can be difficult because it is so popular. There are a couple of parking areas just off the plaza but they can be full at times too.
  • Came here on a Tuesday evening for the famers market and it was great! Lots of people with picnic gear and goodies from the market. Fruit and veggies at the stands were great, a few beer/wine vendors, and some local natural gardening supplies! The live band was fun too!
  • Great that the Tuesday farmers market has returned. Terrific products, vendors and good music to boot. What's not to like.
  • In the spring and summer they host the best Farmers market. Bring the family or a date and drink wine/beer in the park while getting some great farmers market food and produce.
