Mission Santa Inés is a Spanish mission in the present-day city of Solvang, California, and named after St. Agnes of Rome. Founded on September 17, 1804 by Father Estévan Tapís of the Franciscan order, the mission site was chosen as a midway point between Mission Santa Barbara and Mission La Purísima Concepción, and was designed to relieve overcrowding at those two missions and to serve the Indians living east of the Coast Range.Use our Solvang trip planner to arrange your visit to Old Mission Santa Ines and other attractions in Solvang.
The mission was home to the first learning institution in Alta California and today serves as a museum as well as a parish church of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Most of the original church was destroyed on December 21, 1812 in an earthquake centered near Santa Barbara that damaged or destroyed most of California's missions. The quake also severely damaged other mission buildings, but the complex was not abandoned. A new church, constructed with 5to walls and great pine beams brought from nearby Figueroa Mountain, was dedicated on July 4, 1817. A water-powered grist mill was built in 1819, about half a mile from the church. In 1821, a fulling mill was added, designed by newly arrived American immigrant Joseph John Chapman.

Recently restored, this mission is a delight. The garden is beautiful and the cemetery really interesting. Totally recommendable more »
We just had a 5th visit to Solvang in 12 years and every time we go, we attend mass daily. We absolutely love the mission! more »
How can you not visit the mission when it is right there. It was small compared to others but it is good that it is holding services. The mission tour was self guided and not extensive. Some of the..... more »
This is a nice mission to visit and unfortunately easy to pass by on the highway. Located on the eastern side of Solvang it has breathtaking views of the Santa Ynez mountain range and the magnificent valley below. Parking is free and it's easy to find a nice spot. It can get rather hot here in the Summer months and shaded parking spots fill up early. There's not too much to see here and the self guided tour can be completed in about 30 minutes. The gift shop is nice and they have a lot of neat things to buy. The mission is located within easy walking distance to downtown Solvang, so there's no real reason to miss seeing this historical landmark.
#19, of the 21 Missions, built in 1804. It's a living operating Mission, run by the Capuchin Franciscans. It's been in continuous use since the early days. It's small compared to the other Missions. But one of the best preserved, and renovated. But, to me a artists/photographer it lacks the artistic charm of the older, weather beaten Missions. Admission to the Mission is $6. That let's you in for a self guided tour of artifacts, the main church, and well maintained gardens and graveyard. Great views of the valley from the parking lot. Peaceful, charming, and quaint. Walking distance from downtown Solvang.
This is a wonderful mission, but be mindeful it is still a working church. There was a serenity that reached my soul even in the small Mother room off to the side. there are a lot of artifacts and art inside and a peaceful meditiation garden to walk thru. and yes there is a very clean bathroom.
This mission has beautiful gardens! It has a small church, but masses are still celebrated every week.
Cool historical spot..nice gardens..was able to attend a mass on a Sunday..nice venue for events..
