Alaska Raptor Center, Sitka

Categories: Wildlife Areas, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.8/5 based on 600 reviews on the web
Working to protect and rehabilitate the state's many species of predatory birds, Alaska Raptor Center is one of the most extensive organizations of its kind in the country. The facility is set on nearly 7 ha (17 acres) of forest and is home to birds of prey, some of whom will be rehabilitated and eventually released into the wild and some of whom are permanent residents due to their injuries. One of the center's crowning features is its massive flight training center, an enclosed outdoor area where recovering eagles can practice the hunting, landing, and flight skills that may have degraded during their incapacitation. Be sure to watch the birds in action from the viewing corridor. Using our world travel planner, Sitka attractions like Alaska Raptor Center can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Especially if you have any interest in birds. Raptors are rescued and returned to the wild if possible and if not they are well taken care of. Don't forget to make a contribution!
  • We took the community bus ($3 for all day - what a deal!) from the Fortress of the Bear to the Raptor Center. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. We were just in time for one of the bald eagle ...  read more »
  • This is a must see visit. It is a rehabilitation and educational center for all manner of birds, though concentrated on raptors. Though you will see many eagles while in Sitka, this is your chance to get up close to these amazing birds and learn more about them, as well as other types of raptors and several types of owls. The outdoor exhibits are in a lush setting and they mimic as best as possible the bird's natural environments. The staff is very knowledgeable and you can tell their work is also their passion.
  • Unlike the Fortress of the Bears (oh, man, so depressing!), the Raptor Center delivers on up-close, personal encounters with majestic eagles and owls. A camera with a good zoom will do you well here, as there are many opportunities to snag dramatic shots of the birds the Raptor Center has adopted or is nursing back to health. Walk the quiet paths among the evergreens, interact with the friendly and knowledgeable staff, and spend some time with your phone in your pocket for a change, soaking up the ambience. Recommended.
  • Don't miss it. Spectacular. Learned so much from the nicest people who work there and love what they do. The birds of prey are the real show. Sitka, Alaska is beautiful!
  • Must see! See bald eagles and other birds that have been injured. The center nurses them back to health or if they can't return to the wild, they take care of them for life.
  • Great organization to learn about eagles, owls, and other raptors. Nice low impact hikes and landscape as well.
