McCarthy Beach State Park, Side Lake
Categories: State Parks, Nature & Parks
McCarthy Beach State Park is a state park of Minnesota, USA, on the Sturgeon Lake chain near Hibbing. It is located in French Township, Saint Louis County.EcosystemThirty-three species of wildlife inhabit the park including white-tailed deer, black bear, timber wolves, chipmunks, red squirrels, raccoons, and several species of reptiles and amphibians. More than 175 species of birds also visit the area. The park protects a northern boreal forest with stands of red and white pine and leatherleaf-black spruce lowlands.GeologyThe glaciers that moved through the area gouged and tore at the bedrock, the cooled lava of ancient volcanoes. During that period, glaciers flowed south, retreated north, and flowed south again. The first glacier stopped where McCarthy Beach is now located. It left low rolling hills with steep sides called moraines. Between the hills, the glaciers gouged valleys and in the larger valleys, lakes were formed. To visit McCarthy Beach State Park on your trip to Side Lake, use our Side Lake vacation planner.

Beach is gorgeous! Water is pretty shallow and is very clear. Has nice facilities. Also has picnic tables, fire pits, bathrooms and camping.
Beautiful beach. You can walk out for what seems like a football field length before it gets deep. Also the water is clear. The children play for hours in the water. The forest surrounding is serene and peaceful.
One of the biggest sand beaches in Northern MN. Great place for kids as the water is very shallow for a long ways out. The campground is on one lake while the beach is on another. Access from both lakes to a chain of lakes. Excellent for boating and watersports.
One of my family's favorite places to swim. Long sandy beach with a shallow lake. It's a State Park so you have to pay to park or have a park pass but it is worth it.
Awesome time at the beach. Picnic tables in the shade, sandy beach for building sand castles, swimming, paddle boarding, and it wasn't over crowded. They have bathrooms and changing facilities on site.
Great bass Lake and amazing overall experience. 3rd time here in a row!
